The 12th annual Travis Outlaw Day is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at McKee Park and features a number of outdoor events aimed at bringing the community together.
Outlaw, a former professional basketball player and Starkville High School graduate, has hosted the event since 2004. In 2005, Starkville set Aug. 26 as the annual Travis Outlaw Day.
Saturday’s events include: softball and football throws, sack races, a basketball tournament and seven-on-seven flag football contests. Grand prizes will be awarded to event winners.
A barbecue cook-off is also scheduled.
John Outlaw Sr., Travis’ father and former Starkville Police Department assistant chief, said the event averages about 3,000 attendees each year.
“We’ll have something for everyone Saturday,” John Outlaw Sr. said. “The biggest thing about this is how it brings the community together. The community comes first for Travis. We want everyone to come on out and enjoy themselves and the festivities.”
About 100 volunteers come together to pull off the event, he said. Although organizers “have everything pretty much lined up,” John said those willing to pitch in Saturday should find his wife, Markeeta Outlaw, during the day’s event.
