JACKSON -- The lesbian high school student embroiled in a legal flap over her school''s prom policy was presented with a $30,000 scholarship on Friday when she appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."
Constance McMillen was speechless after the talk show host pulled out an oversized check from the Web site, Tonic.Com, a digital media company.
DeGeneres said she admired McMillen for challenging the Itawamba County School District rules that would prevent her from escorting her girlfriend to the prom. The school district canceled the April 2 prom in response to McMillen''s requests.
A hearing is scheduled Monday in federal court in Aberdeen on the American Civil Liberties Union''s motion to force the district to hold the prom.

Wow, that's really great! I'm sure it hasn't been easy for that girl to stand up for what is right. I can only imagine how some of her fellow students have been treating her. No doubt blaming her for the loss of their prom, because it couldn't possibly be the bigoted attitudes of the school leadership that are the problem. Use that 30K and run far away from Mississippi!

she got the attention she was trying to get. Had she just bought her ticket and her friends ticket or they bought their own tickets and not said anything about who she was going with and what they were wearing, no one would have known a thing until that night and all this would have been avoided. But NO, she wanted to make this a big deal. She went around school announcing her plans and thats how it became such a big deal,(my child attends the school), and she earns money for this foolishness. I dont condone the school or her, but she wanted to create a scandal, and I guess we should say thanks for giving MS one more nationally known blemish. as if we dont already have enough.

the declination of morals and values of the United States of America has taken a huge toll on this great nation. no one seems to care anymore. i do not agree with the gay or lesbian lifestyle as i choose to believe in what the Bible says on this subject. i can only imagine how mad the other students are that they are missing out on their prom because of her lifestyle choice. however, we will all stand in front of God one day and have to explain our doings here on this earth.
in my opinion, she should have kept her mouth shut and her lifestyle to herself. why on earth would anyone want to bring attention and sometimes shame on their family by going public with this stuff.
i am proud to be a mississippian but i will also stand and be firm on my beliefs and try my best with all i have to keep this kind of stuff out of our school systems and out of our state.
if we all took a stance, it might make a difference.

I feel if the kids could go to school with her all the year long then whats the big deal of them going to the prom? I live her town and ashamed of the way she is being treated, I do know that our juviniles are being represented in court by a lesbian and our county pays for this. Is'nt this double standards? Come on Itawamba County wake up!!!

You should be ashamed of yourself. She should have acted in secrecy to avoid scandal?? If everyone thought like you, gays would still be firmly sequestered in the closet, hiding and lying about their true selves to avoid censure!
Miss McMillen deserves to take whomever she wishes to prom! And kudos to her for having to courage to speak up and speak out against prejudice and unfair treatment. And kudos to Ellen and Tonic.com for providing Miss McMillen such an opportunity to create a great future for herselft.

Debbie - I'll gladly take a stance. A stance for equality and tolerance regardless of sexual orientation or any other "lifestyle choice".
This girl didn't do anything wrong. Her lawsuit asks for $1 in damages. She isn't out to make money for this. The school policy clearly says that one cannot attend the prom with a same sex date. According to her in the past other students had been kicked out of prom for having same sex dates, so she went ahead of time to the administration to try to get permission. They told her she couldn't come to the prom with her date. That is wrong and I'm glad she sacrificed for herself so that maybe others in the future won't have to endure the same discrimination.
Mississippi has only itself to blame for these sorts of blemishes.

Are you serious??? I am very well straight and no I don't agree with the gay/lesbian lifestyle but neither do I judge it. So many people throw up what the Bible says but forget to mention the part that says "JUDGE NOT" HE WHO JUDGE SHALL BE JUDGED. Wrong is wrong weither you're telling a little white lie, cheating, stealing, cursing, killing, or gay/lesbian. So if you want the truth none of us have room to judge. Like I said no I don't agree with the gay lifestyle but I can't part my lips to to judge it, because thats not my job, It's the LORDS!!! It's 2010 we all know what's going on in these schools it's not like its a secret any more. If they want to bring their same sex bf/gf oh well let them bring them. Just apply the same rules to them that you do to any other couple at the prom, no kissing, to overly close dancing, etc... I do think she should have just brought her date instead of broadcasting, but if you think of it; if Martin Luther King had of just kept his mouth shut, if Rosa Parks had of just gotten up, it Malcom X had of not fought then things would be a lot different, there would have never been a change so some times you just got to open your mouth and stand for what you believe in. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything!!!!

We who God made a little lower then the Angels dont' What a pity? We need to wake up with our smart selves, before God really gets angry. No sin is bigger than any. A sin aganist your own body is not only a sin aganist God but aganist your own body. God made male for female, female for male, period. Smart Ellicks wake up. Why should this young lady be allowed to bring her lesbian girlfriend to school. I don't want to be forced to "accept" her lifestyle. I, as a Christian, am suppose to be ashamed of what I believe and not say anything. God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. I am so tired of being told not to judge when the acts are out for all to see. The Bible says,'Judge not lest by the same measure you judge, you shall be judged" This country was founded on Biblical princibles and since then the moral thermometer of this great nation has gone off the charts. If we would following the ten commandments we would be so much better off.

This is amazing!! This is the example our future generations are seeing. No wonder the Octomom gets attention these days. The media and this world, in general, needs to accept that EVERYTHING is just not acceptable with GOD. We always do what we feel is best but in the end, GOD is going to have the last say-so. Look in the Bible, there is no record of GOD giving men and women HIS authority to have sex or marry. When those acts occurred in the Bible, GOD punished the people who did it (Sodom and Gomorroah). Get your Bible, people, and those of you who say, "GO CONSTANCE! GO ELLEN!!" You all are pathetic! It's just like saying, "GO, SATAN! TEAR THIS WORLD ON DOWN TO HELL!!!"

I wasnt saying that she should act in secrecy, I was saying why scream it from the mountaintops that shes going with a girl as her lover/date, whatever you want to call it. The straight people dont go buy tickets and say, "just so you know, Im going with a girl/boy and this is what they will be wearing". I could care less who or what she goes with, she could take a poodle if she wants. The only person I have to answer for on judgement day is myself. She wanted attention and I do not think she deserves money for this.
boondockslady commented at 3/19/2010 5:35:00 PM:
I believe she should have just went to the prom and not made a bid deal of it. I believe she only wants money and for everyone to know her when they see her. Nationally or locally. I have read about what she wanted but where is the girl she was going to take to this prom? I haven't seen her name mentioned or any comments from her. Is there really another girl or is she just wanted all the money and attention she can get? I don't have anything against gay people I don't have to answer for them when judgment comes, but we all have to answer for ourselves. Is she ready to do this?
Carol commented at 3/19/2010 6:07:00 PM:
If the young adults in this country look at the adults, the babyboomers, as an example, then how else could they live?
we do not make decent examples for the young people-parents have open marriages and the kids know their parents are so involved. They party and drink and live for the next chance to do it again.
adults are hypocrits. Show me a Christian home and I will show you how God intended for us to live out our lives. We are here to serve God and to serve others, our fellow man, to be an example to all. Our lifestyle is to be that which is pleasing to God, no if, ands or buts about it.

I believe young people should be taught respect. This young girl respected authority by asking for permission rather than breaking the rules by just showing up at the prom. What was she asking for? just a few hrs of food, music and fun and a memory with friends. what could possibly happen? The adults out of fear of a few people decided not to give her an exception, just coz they do not respect this teen as a human being. what did they teach the rest of the kids? You can get away by disrespecting everyone who does not think like you. Genuinely afraid for these kids to become adults with similar values. regarding the money, it was pure luck and a genuine kindness of Ellen's heart. remember how she got chucked out of ABC when she came out on her show?
WOW!! unbelievable? You sure are commented at 3/19/2010 6:36:00 PM:
I don't care if your child belongs to the school or not, you still don't know squat. Was your child attending the prom? If so was he/ she excited? Usually when a teen is going to prom he/she is so excited to go they want to talk details to their friends, usually that conversation has topics like, who's your date? What are you wearing? Where's dinner? How are you getting there? Etc... Regardless of the relationship status of the couple going together, everyone knows all these things before hand. Why should have she kept all this excitement of Prom a secret until the night of? Isn't she allowed to express her excitement before hand like everyone else? That's part of the fun leading up to the big day! Isn't it?? Again, why should she be quiet until the night of? Only to get all dressed up for a wonderful highschool memory and be told to leave as she enters the school. After she has already paid for dinner, fee's for tickets and photo's, and her outfit? That's the dumbest idea i've ever heard. Wouldn't it upset you if your child was all dressed up and ready for prom with everything paid for, only to return home in tears because the school didn't agree on your child or there date because of their weight, color, appearence, etc.. or should I say their health problems? Being gay is not a choice. Do you honestly think people choose to be gay? Why would you choose to be a target for people to make fun of for being different? If you have any brains in your head you wouldn't. So how is that different for anyone else? Think about it, it makes sence. Most kids try to avoid negative peer attention in school. I think that was great she spoke up for what she believes, was she supposed to forfit all her prom dreams so everyone else could go and enjoy themselves? I think not. Sorry for your child and whom ever had to miss prom at that school, but whats fair for one is fair for all! I also believe what kudos said above! I agree with kudos!! And for all you religion freaks, I have my beliefs in God, if he is going to judge people for being gay(somthing out of their control) then he will probley judge me for my uncontrolled health issues, and I have many, so I must be going to hell for those, that's of course if that's how it really is. Either that or you religion freaks that think you know the drill will actually all go to hell for judging people so unfairly
for their differences, which is what I'm hoping for!!

A court will order a school to hold a prom just so a young lady has the first amendment "right" to show off her girlfriend in public.
That's probably the same court that won't allow other students at the same school to exercise their first amendment "right" to pray or even say Merry Christmas.

Do you Bible wavers even have a clue as to where this book came from that you are sure has all the answers?
You do realize it was an agreed upon version put out by the Roman Catholic Church, and done so to allow them to label all over versions as fakes. It wasn't that this was the "true story", it was this is the only one they would allow to be used without facing the wrath of the RCC.
And if you are looking at the King James version, you are looking at a work written by one man under contract with the King of England for the sole purpose of making himself appear to be in power with the grace of God. He did this for two reasons: the church did not allow divorces, and he wanted rid of his present wife so that he could pursue his mistress, and to protect himself from being over-thrown by his countrymen as retaliation for the hard times they were experiencing in England.
It's all in the history books if you'd care to look it up.

There have been females wearing a tux to proms in the past and there will be more in the future. Girls danced with each other when I was a kid and there was no big deal. Keep your sexual orientation to yourself--that's where it belongs. As far as Ellen's gift is concerned--I'll bet there was no $30,000 given to families trying to adopt children from China or some other 3rd world country. Besides, I haven't seen any info on the girl's grades in school--maybe she deserves the scholorship, maybe not. But to give someone this kind of gift says alot about a society--if you want to refer to so much history--you who love to contradict what the Bible says--check out history--the start of a society's demise is it's moral decay.

If she wanted to take her girlfriend whats the problem. Its a lot of things going on in the world that's not right one sin is no greater than the other. The Bible says Thou shall not kill or steal but people kill, rob and steal daily. The girl has a right to take who she wants to the prom no matter who it is. I don't believe in the lifestyle but taht is her decision leave her alone. For the people who says that this is causing a decline in whatever. The world has been going to hell in a handbasket long before this. She didn't do it for money and for the ones who said she did it for attention. I think the girl had a right to talk about who she was taking to the prom all girls do. I empathize and sympathize with all thoughts on here. But lets put this whole situation in perspective. First of all, it is a public school and you know that religious and personal difference will be/have to be accepted in these institutions. For those that have such objections of such activities in these "public" institutions; you have the right and the options to establish, send, and finance your children to attend Christian instititions. Wow! Wasn't that easy?
If you are so committed to Christian beliefs and behavior.......INVEST. Invest some of that money you spend on those leisure items you buy so often (fast food/fine dining, name brand clothes, large homes and expensive cars and etc.) to ensure your children are provided the safe environment you feel is so needed. I am a Christian. I don't believe in ANY sexual immorality. But I also know the power of the buck....Put your money, where your mouth is. You can even commit yourselves in establishing exclusive Christian communities. But will you SACRIFICE to get it? So easy if you are indeed serious.

Since homosexuals don't reproduce we can rule out genetic since natural selection would have wiped it out eons ago. Right?
Tex commented at 3/22/2010 9:12:00 AM:
And my friends asked me why I moved to MS from TX...and I tell them for the humor.....I need to send them the link to this page...most of these comments are just to damn funny not to be shared.
Hhmm commented at 3/22/2010 9:18:00 AM:
Greg, if you go by that theory, then why are there any genetic mutations or diseases at all? Wouldn't they all have died out? People with certain forms of dwarfism cannot have children, yet thousands of Americans are still born smaller. Many times from parents of normal sizes.
Greg commented at 3/22/2010 10:26:00 AM:
Anything that selects against reproduction will, over time, wipe out that strain. Not all diseases or mutations select against reproduction, not even dwarfism. One should also note that with the exception of artificial insemination (very recent) all homosexuals are the offspring of heterosexual unions and have parents, grandparents, etc. that had sex between male and female.
Taking these facts into account, science would conclude that homosexuality is not a genetic trait. That leaves us with the possibilities that it is a birth defect, mental illness, or learned behaviour.
Does anyone want to make a case for which of the above 3 choices best describes the 2% of the US population that is homosexual?

First of all let me say that I don't agree with same sex relationships..but I must say this..the school's first error was to make the statement in the policy that you can't bring someone of the same sex...this is putting religion in the school..and we all know that is wrong..and yet most of what I am reading is "Bible quotes"..let me clue a few of you in on this..this girl has constitutional rights whether you like it or not..and the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in several cases that the students rights don't stop at the school doors..Judges have ruled that the schools system can't violate the students 1st amendment rights for freedom of expression, free speech, and freedom of religion..this falls under the free exercise clause of the 1st amendment ..5th Circuit Judge Gewin states that school officials do not possess absolute authority over students..students are persons under the constitution..they are possessed of fundamental rights which the state must respect..students are not to be regarded as closed-circuit recipients of only that which the state chooses to communicate..school officials can't suppress "expressions of feelings with which they do not contend.." and with that being said..if we don't stand up for our childrens rights..who will?? You people need to focus your attention on other school issues...like making sure we have credited teachers in the classrooms..so that your child(ren) can get the best education possible..or like this crap that the school boards are throwing at you saying that your child will be safer wearing a school uniform..if I wanted on that school campus all I would have to do is go and buy navy pants and white or red shirt and I am on your campus...the school board is only trying to tell you what you are going to do..stop letting them dictate to you and you start telling them what you want to see happen...wake up people..the coffee has scorched !!!

thank god for AIDS!
Tex commented at 3/22/2010 1:05:00 PM:
Really ty??? You DO know that AIDS does not discriminate between straight, gay or idiots....don't you?
Matt commented at 3/22/2010 1:23:00 PM:
Let the kids decide? So if they don't want blacks at the prom is that ok then to? What a prejudice state we live in filled with poor white people that only feel better about their lives if they can degrade others. Ty you have a better chance of catching AIDS from your sister then the 2 girls in this story or Ellen. I guess Mississippi will never change for the better. Ignorant, poor idiots seem to be all we have here.
Tex commented at 3/22/2010 1:29:00 PM:
Matt....Yes let the kids decide...most kids if left to make their own decisions in matters such as this do not parrot the rhetoric of their elders. And I agree that ty's remark exemplifies the conception that people have of the South.
Greg commented at 3/22/2010 3:35:00 PM:
Until you define homosexuality from a scientific and legal perspective, ruling on how society should respond in cases like this is not possible. You Bible thumpers, ACLU robots, atheists, gays, and arm chair moral police, don't even know what you are dealing with. It seems any attempt to move the discussion from everybody yelling "I'm Right and you are wrong" to a logical, legal analysis is met with resistance both on a local and national level. Those of you citing Mississippi as being "hick" or "backward" in response to this issue are only illustrating your own ignorance. The legal rights of homosexuals continue to be an issue of debate in every state in the union and most countries in the world with the current controversy surrounding the US Military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy being one high profile case-in-point.
Perhaps someday we can classify homosexuality, then, and only then, can we make policy.
Matt commented at 3/22/2010 3:54:00 PM:
There is no question as to the legal rights of gays to exist and enjoy all the freedoms as anyone else. Mississippi is a racist hick state. A public school has no right to rule on issues such as this. It is the same as many schools in mississippi still having two proms because the white parents don't want blacks around their children in social settings. The same prejudice is at work here.
Greg commented at 3/22/2010 4:27:00 PM:
If homosexuality is not genetic then making a comparison to race based discrimination is invalid.
Your statements actually emphasize my point. Until you classify exactly what a homosexual legally is, you can't make policy. Not at a Mississippi high school nor a US Army base. Having a "right to exist" does not translate into public policy.
Is homosexuality genetic, mental defect or disease, or simply a choice? Pick one and then prove your case. Do that and you will have accomplished step one.
KJ commented at 3/22/2010 8:25:00 PM:
There isn't any need to prove a case. The fact that homosexuality exists isn't actually in question. Your argument, Greg, is a red herring. We provide heterosexuals with many benefits even though, according to your argument, we don't know whether heterosexuality is genetic or a choice. Delaying policies to protect the rights of groups which are discriminated against based on the real or perceived ignorance of those who fight to continue that discrimination only delays those policies. It doesn't prevent them. Our country is slowly but surely realizing the promise of the Declaration of Independence. No amount of pseudo-science, flawed logic, or canceling of proms on the part of bigots can stop it.
I think you will find, if you bother to look, that not only is it possible to make policy, it's possible to rule on how society should respond in cases like this. And courts have been doing exactly that all over the country. Want to have a club to support glbt students? There's a policy for that. Want to change your rules retroactively to escape that policy? There's a policy for that, too.
Personally, I'm not sure what everyone is afraid of; it's just love.
Greg commented at 3/22/2010 10:56:00 PM:
KJ I have not made an argument nor advocated a delay. There is no red herring and the very fact that you mention all the rulings all over the map on this issue just illustrates the only point I am making. Homosexuality is undefined. This judge rules this way, and that one that way. It is a helter-skelter legal mess and will continue to be until a standard is defined. Americans seem to enjoy approaching problems from the wrong direction and keeping the courts jammed with legal pablum. Mix a little religion in with it and well...you see the result.
All the opinions, all the screaming and arguing, all this crap has no basis. If we would do the real science first, there would be much less to squabble about would there not?
KJ commented at 3/22/2010 11:52:00 PM:
I suppose you may feel that homosexuality is undefined or not completely understood. But if it isn't, then heterosexuality is similarly situated. And yet that does not impede policy-making at any level of government as far as I know.
Homosexuality clearly exists, discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation clearly exists, public policy against discrimination already exists. Civil rights protections based on genetics (race), choice (religion), and even disability are already subject of policy. Why then would it matter which of these protected classes homosexuality falls into? If it is going to fall into one class of protection or another, why must anti-discrimination policies wait?
The fact that there are multiple policy solutions to discrimination on sexual orientation is a result of the lack of a federal statute naming sexual orientation as a protected class. States are able to individually create policies that address (or refuse to address) sexual orientation discrimination.
As I read it, arguing that one orientation be held to a higher standard before public policy may address discrimination aimed at those citizens is advocating for a delay, which is the substantially the same as arguing for continued discrimination. While you may not have meant that, it is how I interpreted your earlier comments. In the absence of federal legislation that makes sexual orientation a protected class legal pablum is, sadly, the only route available.

don't you people realize that MS is the only state that would make such a big deal out of all this? we're the laughing stock of the country b/c we're still caught up in the stupid! our test scores are low, our drop out rate is high, and our teachers grossly underpaid!! but we'd rather fight over two teens wanting to go to prom together? think about it!
this is why MS is ranked LAST in all the things we'd like to be first in and FIRST in all the things we'd like to be last in! the real question is, WHO CARES??? if you're my neighbor and choose whatever lifestyle, WHO CARES if it doesn't affect my life? all you righteous christians should know that no sin is greater than another (sin is sin). so why aren't you perfect people raising a hell about all the liars your kids go to school with? aren't those who have premarital sex and smoke cigarettes poisoning our schools? shouldn't you all be asking those kids not to attend prom also?
this is the same kind of mind set that we are fighting in iraq and afghanistan whether you people realize it or not. the "my way is the only way" attitude cultivates hate! and the crazy thing is, most of you super christians on here sin the most! don't you realize that by looking down on someone b/c of their beliefs is a sin? whatever happened to good old prayer? isn't God powerful enough to deal with these people appropriately? some of us would rather play God instead! way to go MS, way to go!
same ol same ol commented at 3/23/2010 2:49:00 AM:
and all this talk about the bible, who made the bible the official state constitution? what if this young lady doesn't believe in the bible? shouldn't she be able to practice whatever she likes? if your kids are as holy as some of you, you shouldn't have to worry about them being affected by this young lady's choices? way to go MS, way to go!
linda commented at 3/23/2010 7:07:00 AM:
WOW! These comments are quite interesting. I don't think the girl's intent was to land on Ellen. I am guessing from this reaction that if she showed up with another girl without asking, she would have been kicked out so that's why she probably asked permission. I do think its terrible to cancel the entire prom and ruin it for everyone in the class. I really don't understand why her lifestyle bothers people so much, if it doesn't affect you personally then just ignore it. I could maybe understand if she were a relative and you didn't agree with it then maybe you would be angry but its not like your child will become "hypnotized" at the prom and starting making out with members of the same sex. Stop bringing God into this and take a look at yourself and think, life is too short to worry about other people's problems, take care of yourself. Put the prom back on for ALL the kids in the school.
Greg commented at 3/23/2010 9:25:00 AM:
"lack of a federal statute naming sexual orientation as a protected class"
Now you got it. If your black, that's genetic. If you are schizophrenic, that's mental defect or disease. If you are atheist, that is by choice. Public policy is much more clearly defined once the category of law that is applicable is defined.
That is what needs to be fixed.
Oh and for those of you who continue to unjustly bash Mississippi, you should do a little research. Mississippi ranks very high (top 10) in same sex couples and homosexuals as a percentage of population. I am not sure that is a good thing but it is a fact none the less. This state needs to deal with this definition issue much more urgently than most.
resident commented at 3/24/2010 11:21:00 PM:
Ok Greg, let's play. So we're leading in same sex couples, what else? Now mind you, leading in ignorance, inbreeding, knuckle dragging, and the stump breaking of cattle don't count.
We do seem to have an abundance of people who will sing about how great the state is even as we come in dead last in all topics, but that might be explained by the inbreeding and mouth-breathing all too common here.
Face it Greg, if Mississippi was a fish, you'd throw it back.
