Local law enforcement officers have arrested two men in the last week and charged them with domestic violence-aggravated assault.
Officers with the Columbus Police Department arrested Jeffrey Anderson, 46, of 1417 13th Ave. N., Saturday night at his home. The day of the arrest, Anderson allegedly beat and choked a family member, said Assistant Police Chief Fred Shelton. The victim was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle but did not suffer serious injuries, he added.
Attempts at strangulation in a domestic violence case take the charges from a misdemeanor to a felony in Mississippi, Shelton said.
Anderson’s bond was set at $30,000. He is being held in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.
In an unrelated case, Lowndes County sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday arrested James Priess, 26, of 8061 Highway 12 East, No. 7, for allegedly stabbing a family member in the leg. He is charged with one count of domestic violence-aggravated assault.
LCSO Capt. Ryan Rickert said the victim’s injury was non life-threatening, and she refused medical treatment.
The use of a weapon in a domestic violence case makes it a felony, Rickert said.
Priess is scheduled to appear in justice court today.
