A railroad worker was killed Sunday morning in Artesia after being run over by a train.
Christopher Ross Hubbard, 36, of Cottondale, Alabama, died on the railroad tracks at about 10:30 a.m., Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said.
Hubbard, a conductor for the Alabama Southern Railroad Company, was on the ground instructing the engineer piloting the train. The engineer was in the process of reversing the train when Hubbard stopped giving instructions. The engineer had already begun to stop the train when he saw Hubbard lying on the ground.
The train was preparing to depart for Tuscaloosa, Alabama, when the accident occurred.
A spokesperson for Alabama Southern Railroad Company confirmed the company is investigating the incident. A call to the company’s counsel was not returned by press time.
