Henderson Ward Stewart elementary complex in Starkville was placed under a precautionary lockdown on Thursday as local police officers responded to an incident where a man reportedly made threats to his Pilcher Street neighbors and barricaded himself within a home.
Officers charged Nicholas O. Monroe, 24, of Starkville, with trespassing and served him with eight outstanding warrants — seven for trespassing and one for violating the terms and conditions of the probation he received as part of previous trespassing convictions — after arriving on scene at about 10:45 a.m.
Starkville police believed Nicholas was armed during the incident and notified the school district of the ongoing situation, Starkville Police Chief Frank Nichols said in a press release.
Pilcher Street runs adjacent to the elementary campus, which serves second through fourth grades.
Monroe was eventually detained without officers using force, according to the press release.
The release states that the incident is still under investigation, and additional charges are pending.
