ABERDEEN — An inmate has been found dead in his cell at the Monroe County Detention Center.
Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal 55-year-old Joseph Wayne Smith, of Aberdeen, was found dead in his bunk by two jailers after 7:30 a.m. Friday during the breakfast call.
Gurley says Smith was declared dead on the scene before his office was notified.
Smith had been in custody since Wednesday when he was arrested as part of a drug roundup by the county Sheriff’s Office.
Gurley’s office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are investigating the death.
Smith’s body will undergo an autopsy Monday at the Mississippi Crime Lab in Pearl. Gurley says foul play is not suspected.
