A Monday afternoon fire has left a mobile home near New Hope in ruins.
No one was reported injured.
Wayne Doyle, chief for the Lowndes County District 3 Volunteer Fire Department, said firefighters responded to the blaze at the home on Christian Circle off of Highway 69 shortly after 12:30 p.m. A neighbor reported the fire. Homeowner Harold Hood had left that morning.
“It was fully involved when we got here,” Doyle said. “The resident left about 9 a.m. Everything was fine when he left home.”
Hood, who’s lived in the home for 15 years, said he hurried home when a neighbor contacted him.
Firefighters remained on scene for hours to douse the home’s smoldering remains and prevent flames from spreading to nearby trees.
Marty Rushing, a neighbor who was on scene while firefighters extinguished the fire, said he hated to see Hood lose his home. Rushing said he’s lived in the neighborhood for about five years, and Hood was one of the first people to greet him.
“He’s a real good man,” Rushing said. “He’d do anything in the world to help you.”
Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
