An argument between Mayor Robert Smith and Ward 5 Councilman Kabir Karriem boiled over into a physical fight at City Hall Thursday night.
"(Smith) beat him up pretty good," according to a city official who did not want to be named.
Reportedly, Karriem confronted Smith at City Hall over an issue one official characterized as an ongoing argument or disagreement between Karriem and Smith.
WCBI TV this morning reported that Karriem went to city hall after the two argued over the first-term councilman''s opposition to signing a $2 million agreement to restore the old Highway 182 bridge.
Police Chief Joseph St. John said the investigation was turned over to the Lowndes County Sheriff''s Department. Sheriff''s officials confirmed they are investigating, but refused further comment this morning.
Neither Karriem nor Smith could be reached for comment this morning.
Columbus Chief Operations Officer David Armstrong said he could not elaborate on the incident, as it is a "personnel matter" and he "was involved." He did say that it was "a very bad situation ... absolutely inexcusable."
According to sources, Karriem sought treatment at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle after the incident, which occurred between 9-9:30 p.m. Hospital officials could not confirm that Karriem went to the hospital.
According to sources, Ward 1 Councilman Gene Taylor witnessed the incident. He could not be reached for comment this morning.
"From the city''s standpoint we''re treating this a personnel matter, and we don''t comment on personnel matters," said vice mayor and Ward 6 Councilman Bill Gavin.
"If we don''t handle this with the urgency and respect it deserves, we as a town are going to be set back," a city official said, on condition of anonymity.

TM commented at 4/2/2010 12:00:00 PM:
It is time for Mayor Smith to resign. Could you imagine President Obama reacting this way with those who challenge his views or policies. It is time for the Bully to go. Most people in Columbus have known for years that Robert operates thru intimidation. We will not tolerate bullies in the Mayor's Office. Do the honorable thing Mr. Smith and resign.
JC commented at 4/2/2010 12:04:00 PM:
What do you mean by "they", Concerned?
TM commented at 4/2/2010 12:07:00 PM:
Calculating to be beaten by the Mayor? Please give me a break. That would be taking political ambition to a new level. If you feel the need to apologize for the fiscal condition of the City when you tucked tail and ran away; then seek absolution the the citizens of Columbus. What we don't need from you now is sideline comments from Starkville. We gave you a chance to improve Columbus for the better yet you lacked political courage and committment. Happy Holiday Mr. Rupp. Stay in Starkville. Please

As far as Jeffrey Rupp I would gladly welcome him back.
As for Smith and Karriem? They both need locking up. Smith should be removed from office. By keeping this incident quiet is suppose to "handle this with the urgency and respect it deserves" ... what the town desrves is people in office who don't act like idiots and is qualified to handle the job.

I think it is a shame for our city officials to conduct themselves in this manner. Whether we like an individual or not who has been elected to a particular office is not really the issue. We do however, expect them to be professional in their actions and reactions toward one another. If we as the local citizens don't want a particular individual in office then the best thing to do is to vote them out of office. One comment on this fight between the mayor and councilman; they should be held to the same standard of the law as are the rest of us.
Concerned commented at 4/2/2010 12:57:00 PM:
"they should be held to the same standard of the law as are the rest of us."
Exactly. The citizens should not have to be forced to pay Karriem for the actions brought on by Karriem and Smith. That's why they both should immediately be removed from office. It would set a good example for the rest of the officials in the city to know they will have to pay for their actions. Hopefully it would make them handle our business in a more appropriate manner.

"a very bad situation ... absolutely inexcusable."
Sorry ABRA R. BUTLER but you seem to be using the same logic as Mayor Smith was using. If you can't win an argument based on intelligence then resort to violence and slurs? CVarry that crap back to New Orleans. We don't need that in our political system or here.
JD commented at 4/2/2010 2:19:00 PM:
Until we start electing people that have the intelligence to govern, rather than people who are living with a chip on their shoulder about racism that occured 60-100 years ago, we will continue to see this type of activity. I can name several black people that would do a lot better job that those elected, but won't run for office because they don't want to have to put up with the hassle of dealing with their ignorant, racist, constituents.
Concerned commented at 4/2/2010 2:27:00 PM:

Are you feeling a little uncomfortable because of their actions ABRA? I guess you can find justification for them acting this way then ABRA?
Please enlighten me why it is acceptable for these two elected officials to act this way ABRA? Last time I checked assault was illegal as well as disturbing the peace was illegal.
Concerned commented at 4/2/2010 2:50:00 PM:
Like I said ABRA you are welcomed to read into my statements however you want to. I'm so sorry that you have to bare the embarrassment of these two elected officials. I however don't agree with you taking it out on everyone else around you and also calling me a racists.
However what is even more important is that the city of Columbus has to bare this same embarrasement of "these" two elected officials.
I do hope that the citizens of Columbus will use "their votes" more wisely the next time and put some officials in that are capable of focusing on the importance of the citizens of Columbus.

"Chaos after Katrina has nothing to do with the incident at hand"?
Are you kidding? When the going gets tough the citizens of the city of New Orleans acted like animals and broke into stores, homes, and shopping malls as well as raped women in the super dome.
And you say that it doesn't bare a resemblance of the animalistic behaviors of the city of New Orleans? I think it bares a striking resemblance of the behavior in New Orleans. When times get tough instead of pulling together and comforting one another and working to get through their problems they revert to animistic behavior and it suddenly becomes every man for himself?
That is exactly the same behavior that Smith and Karriem participated in and reverted to. Acting like a bunch of animals. They were going on animal instinct instead of using basic order like we as people are "suppose to" have evolved into.

Justis commented at 4/2/2010 3:39:00 PM:
I agree that the behavior is unacceptable. I am not certain it rises to the level of needing to resign. We do not (and will never) know the facts of the incident. To the one who misquoted the report, there was NEVER an eye witness interviewed. The comment that it was "absolutely inexcuseable" was made by another city councilman (most likely Gavin) who simply was interviewed about their feelings on the matter.
At any rate, a pure fist fight has never been the subject of criminal legislation. We should all understand that the spirit of the law that criminalizes a beating is to protect the citizens at large. These two are not a threat nor were they ever a threat to the general citizenry. It was never designed to address a "fight" between to adults. Therefore I doubt any criminal charges will be brought and am convinced they are not warranted.
@Abra - kudos to you for eloquently addressing what in my view was a deliberate attempt to once again classify all Black people the same. Smith and Karriem speak for themselves. They are not an absolute symbol of anything except themselves.
@Concerned - do you use the same logic when you compare the acts of the Tea Party(ers) who spit on elected officials and hurl threats of physical harm because they disagree with the legislative process that our "beloved" and "wise" Founders saw fit to establish? I doubt it!
We should learn to accept the fact that all are flawed - including our elected officials. I expect nothing more from humans that what we are capable of doing - and from time to time that includes messing up!
I wonder where all the outrage was when Rupp bankrupted the city and skipped off to Starkville? Was there a call for his head? And what about the money laundering that has transpired by the good ol' elected officials and their golf buddies who have terrorized our fiscal well-being for DECADES. I hardly think "dooking it out" is worse than STEALING the hard-earned money of our tax-payers and stifling the economic growth of the City for eons. There was no trust placed in Smith and Karriem to not harm one another. They are however trusted to deal honestly and fairly with our money. Now, if you want to seek the advice of the Attorney General on something, start with the City treasury over the past 50 years!

After our "discussion" and his yelling, cursing and calling me a B**** in the public eye. He got his way, then filed a complaint with my employer. He is a bully and so this behavior is not surprising to me at all. I no longer live in Columbus and glad of it. It's shameful that the "powers that be" have to bully to get their way.

Hmmmm this is probably the most pathetic thing I've ever seen about Columbus recently. Makes me glad I moved away. I might even stop saying that I'm from there with this stupid crap that goes on with the leadership. This s*it happens at every level. The thing with J.D. Sanders being forced out, the Jackie Ball Chuck Weldon brawl, Jim Terry and Kamal Karriem committing crimes while they're in office, Harry Sanders getting so sick of the junk that goes on at the county level that he resigned as Board President. Seriously leaders of Columbus???? Really? And now at the highest level with the Mayor. Supposedly over opposition to political views? WTF!! I never saw Jeffrey Rupp or George Wade get into a fistfight when something didn't go their way. I realize people make mistakes but when your an elected official, your under the microscope. Celebrities and athletes have the same burden. So damn it, if you know your under the public scrutiny and are supposed to be setting an example at least for children maybe, why in the hell wouldn't you take a minute to just run it through your head and think about how this might not be the best idea. And Robert Smith used to be a principal if I'm not mistaken? I don't really care which one is to blame or who came out worse or better. I think both of their punkasses ought to be kicked out of office. If they won't voluntarily resign, a well placed vote of no confidence would serve the same purpose. If not then, a petition ought to be circulated and presented to them. Hell, I'd be the first one to sign. Columbus as a town is a great place, most of the people there are fine people...but the leadership HAS TO GO!!! Maybe not all of them, just the ones that have no consideration of how the town looks when these bozos do something stupid and childish.

It is the 21st century and some of "you" people still have the mind-set of your fore-fathers. Columbus would be a better place if people worked together, instead of tearing each other down. You so-called Christians ought to be ashamed of yourselves. "He, who has not sinned, cast the first stone." Remember that? You run to church on Sundays, but you are going to bust HELL wide open.

This could be one of the best places to live any where. You and I are the only ones that can do it. The Black community also needs to look for better candidates than they have had. This is where the races have to work together to make it happen. People care more about the person than the race. If we do not start now we will be on a down hill slid to no end. @ Concerned -- The point I was trying to make was that until we elect public servants dedicated to the greater good of all the community, be they white, brown, tan, black, yellow, green or purple, the situation will not change. I was not being racist. I was merely pointing out that there are many qualified people, both black and white that will not run for public office because of the abuse they would receive at the hands of both white and black racists. Is there a race problem in Columbus? The answer is yes. And it is fostered by a few loud-mouths that cry racism everytime they perceive that they have been wronged by some insignificant thing. They can't see that the majority of people, black and white, are content to go to their jobs and go home to their families every night without having to listen to the rabble rousing of a select few who claim that they have been wronged. It is a deplorable situation when we continue to elect these loud-mouth trouble makers to office.

Its quite interesting to see grown adults agruing in this manner over the internet... and you talk about its an embarrassment to Columbus by having a mayor and cousilman dispute physically against each other! Yes, that is embarrassing, but it is also shameful to see grown adults going back and forth over spilled milk! Should they be punished in some form?? Yes, but please keep the attention on the problem at state... Adults turning this into a race card is horrible... How can you be examples to the next generation with silly comments based on New Orleans! RESPECT THE NATURAL DISASTER!!!
Earlier CONCERNED made a statement in regards to people of New Orleans having animal characteristics! He also stated when times get rough people should pull together and help each other out! Yes, i agrees with the second statement of people helping out when time get rough. However, rough times would be categorized as; needing a place to stay, giving up a pair of shoes, or giving someone a ride, Yes in these scenarios giving a helping hand is applauded!
CONCERNED HAVE YOU EVER BEEN FACED WITH A CATASTROPIC DISASTER BEFORE?? HAVE YOU EVER HAD CLIMB TO YOUR ROOF FOR SAFETY? HAVE YOU EVER BEEN WIPED CLEAN OF ALL YOUR PERSONAL POSSESIONS? When a situation reaches this extent of caliber, "animal characteristics" kick in! especially the one called "SURVIVAL"! So yes all those people that broke into stores, malls, and houses had one thing on their mind! SURVIVE!!! Please do not be quick to judge people/state/race! The same thing would have happened if Columbus was burried under 15ft of water... People of Columbus would break into stores and houses to SURVIVE! THATS HUMAN NATURE! You also brought up rapes happenin in the Super Dome! If you stick 20,000 Columbus citizen into Humphrey Collisum for a couple of weeks, Im pretty sure you are going to have some idiot try to rape another individual!!! So do not disrespect the people of New Orlean by calling them animals! They had to do what was needed to SURVIVE!
So i wish grown people would grow up and stop agruing over stupid horse crap! You do have college students away from home viewing this site reading about home! It is very disgusting to read this about home! Arguing from Ignorance is fun right? Heck NO!!! GROW UP ADULTS!!
Concerned commented at 4/2/2010 7:36:00 PM:
Glad you brought that up ronnie.
I just read the rest of the story at WCBI and it appears Kabir Karriem was acting like and idiot also by putting his finger in the Mayor's face. So I guess my statement stands that they were both acting like animals and neither one was acting any better than the people acted in New Orleans after Katrina still stands acceptable to a person with some sort of intelligence.
But the mayor should not have waited until Kabir Karriem filed assault charges before he turned himself in.

Will Karriem wake up in the morning and think he is late for school again?

I have seen this to many times in the past and now more in Columbus. The county supers do no realize the impact of their working for themselves vs what they are paid for as the county as a whole. What is best for all. Now the city is following in suit. This has got to end, I have been in a community that went through this and flowed into the county. Both lost, but is not the councils who talk themselves up...but he community. No business is going to thinks about us if this keeps up. County and City Councils head, do your darn jobs and act like adults. Think what is best for all not your own property! Jeezzz, thought U.S. Congress are crooks....makes me re-think.
Concerned commented at 4/2/2010 7:44:00 PM:
Yes I have been through hurricanes before. I took a bath in the same water for two weeks until bottled water was shipped in. Then I was being polite to everyone else and used 1 gallon of water to take a bath with for another two weeks. I never at one time thought of breaking into stores and stealing computers like the citizens of New Orleans did. The laws in New Orleans gives them the basic right to take supplies in need of emergencies in order to survive but how can stealing computers help when there was no electricity or INTERNET? They stole because they acted like barbaric animals and thugs. They raped women. So don't tell me I haven't experienced disaster. I have.
The actions of these two leaders was barbaric and very similar to the selfish acts of these people as were reported and even shown on television. It was uncalled for and an embarrassment to our city.
Col-voter commented at 4/2/2010 7:51:00 PM:
WE should expect more from or elected officials and certainly an adult. What is the example this shows for the youth of Columbus and the Mayor's Youth Council. I am curious about the City Attorneys advise that this a personnel matter. Who can be fired? What discipline can the City Council do to the Mayor or another Councilman? At the most it is probably a censure. The only way this could be considered "a personnel matter" is they are paid with our public funds. It is time for transparency in government to come to Columbus, Ms.

CONCERNED!!! REALLY?? Im not talking about your category 1 hurricanes or smaller like disasters, like the tornados that ripped through Caledonia School in recent years... Yes, that is a dangerous disaster, but you cannot compare such a disater with Katrina! You have not been through a CATEGORY 3 HURRICANE ONE ON ONE!!! I CAN TELL YOU, THAT YOU HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED THAT!!! bathing in the same water for two weeks is pety to what the citizens of New Orleans had to deal with! How many floating bodies did you see or move during your disaster? How long did you go without food? How long did you have to stay in your FEMA trailer? WOW!!! Give your self pat on the back CONCERNED... Man two weeks with no water?? Amazing! Its been five years and the city of New Orleans water sysetm is still contaminated from the REAL DISASTER!!! Of course you are going to have some people that take things to another level by taking stupid computers and tvs! but not the majority, lets be real! NBC, CNN, and FOX NEWS get paid off of ratings. Entertainment guy! the news broadcasting business is very slanted if you did not know! So of course news channels made big deals about looting! AND PEOPLE LIKE YOU BOUGHT IN TO IT!!! making their rating increase higher and higher... you have to be really some kind of way to actually believe that most people in that city that took items were mostly focused on a 42inch Flat Screen Samsung, or Mac Book!! There is raping all over America! STOP POINTING FINGERS!!!
NoLA Ex-pat commented at 4/2/2010 8:48:00 PM:
Three comments on the characterization of New Orleanians, in the aftermath of Katrina:
1. The vast majority of the PEOPLE who were caught in the living hell that was the Katrina-ravaged city of New Orleans behaved admirably and with dignity. Don't stereotype and slander the thousands of fine people who were caught in a really bad situation, because of the actions of a few.
2. You can't know how you would react to a life-altering event, like post-Katrina New Orleans, until you have been in the same kind of situation. From your description of your experience, it seems disingenuous for you to equate the two situations.
3. Although I certainly condemn the actions of the individuals who stole non-essential items from local stores, after Katrina, it is absolutely ridiculous to equate the incident between Mayor Smith and Councilman Karriem, who reside in a full-functional community, with the behavior of some of the people who found themselves in the apocalypse that was New Orleans immediately after Katrina.
Concerned, I can't decide if I should be angry with you for impugning the fine city of New Orleans, or if I should just pity you for being such a narrow-minded bigot. Just to be on the safe side, I think that I will do both.
Concerned commented at 4/2/2010 9:11:00 PM:

Again Mayor Robert Smith and Ward 5 Councilman Kabir Karriem both acted like barbaric animals. They resorted to violence instead of using their brains much like the idiotic behavior of the citizens of New Orleans who broke into stores, homes, and shopping malls as well as raped women in the super dome. Mayor Robert Smith's and Ward 5 Councilman Kabir Karriem's actions were inexcusable just like the idiot from New Orleans.

You should think about it a little more. If this is how they react in trying situations such as a simple political disagreement then how you you think they would handle a disaster?

Ok, so what exactly are these great things you think he has done?

I think his lack of concern for the City and County show exactly the kind of person he is and why he is not qualified to hold public office. Voters in his ward need to look further than the color of the skin when voting for public officials. He entered my business several years ago and our dog barked at him. He left angry and as he walked out the door of our business, he said: "I wish your dog had bitten me." NOw, most people that have a dog bark at them are glad the dog doesn't bite them. Not Kabir! I want you to read some state laws and then I want you to try to 1) justify their behavior and 2) tell me why they both weren't charged with disturbing the peace.
§ 97-35-13. Disturbance in public place.
Any person who shall enter any public place of business of any kind whatsoever, or upon the premises of such public place of business, or any other public place whatsoever, in the State of Mississippi, and while therein or thereon shall create a disturbance, or a breach of the peace, in any way whatsoever, including, but not restricted to, loud and offensive talk, the making of threats or attempting to intimidate, or any other conduct which causes a disturbance or breach of the peace or threatened breach of the peace, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be fined not more than five hundred dollars ($500.00) or imprisoned in jail not more than six (6) months, or both such fine and imprisonment.
§ 97-35-15. Disturbance of the public peace or the peace of others; exception.
(1) Any person who disturbs the public peace, or the peace of others, by violent, or loud, or insulting, or profane, or indecent, or offensive, or boisterous conduct or language, or by intimidation, or seeking to intimidate any other person or persons, or by conduct either calculated to provoke a breach of the peace, or by conduct which may lead to a breach of the peace, or by any other act, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by a fine of not more than Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) or by imprisonment in the county jail not more than six (6) months, or both.
(2) The act of breast-feeding shall not constitute a breach of the peace.
(3) The provisions of this section are supplementary to the provisions of any other statute of this state.
So is sticking your finger in someone's face not considered intimidating and threatening? Karriem is guilty
So is physical violence also considered against state law? Smith is guilty
Then why were they not charged with disturbing the peace according to state laws § 97-35-13 and § 97-35-15?

Was someone breast-feeding during all this? what is your point "cencerned"? aRE YOY A LAWYLER ON SOMETHING?
Concerned commented at 4/3/2010 1:49:00 PM:
Then why did you not arrest these two officials for disturbing the peace?
Concerned commented at 4/3/2010 1:52:00 PM:
So you couldn't think of any intelligent counter point so you chose to argue about breast feeding? LOL
Thanks for the compliment. It lets me know that you have nothing useful to add.
ward5 commented at 4/3/2010 1:53:00 PM:
Way to go big K. If the mayor had beat up the "Real" poster in this thread--he would have just turned the other cheek. Yeah right. Truth is , Real would probably be sueing the Mayor on top of the charges. Get real, Real! and you too frankiebird!!! I think big K should let his lawyer sue the Mayor.
ward 6 commented at 4/3/2010 1:59:00 PM:
Is Mr Gavin in charge now that the Mayor is in jail? What were the charges? I vote for Mr Gavin to remain in charge untill this is all cleared up. I know he will do the right thing.
Concerned commented at 4/3/2010 2:06:00 PM:
The mayor was out as soon as he went in apparently. The article said he was entered yesterday around 4:30 pm and out the same day. Now that would pretty much mean the mayor was out by 5 I would think. After 5 he would have had to stay all week wouldn't he? So it appears that he had his picture taken just to silence the public outcry that he should be locked up.
Santa commented at 4/3/2010 2:33:00 PM:
Well I just heard they arrested the Easter Bunny last night. No crap. It is in the paper on line. What is going on in Columbus? I think I will just pass over it this XMAS. Clean up your town and I may come back. ST. NICK
Leaving Town commented at 4/3/2010 3:02:00 PM:
I am not nearly as surprised at the actions of the mayor and the councilman as I am at the unbelievably bad grammar and the awful spelling of the folks posting!!! Lack of education is at the bottom of this problem. No wonder Columbus suffers!
nannynannybooboo commented at 4/3/2010 3:10:00 PM:
I bet you wish you'd voted for Tom G. now ha ha. Serves you right. And you ran off Mr. Marshall too, poor poor judgement in old possum town.
melody commented at 4/3/2010 3:21:00 PM:
Hey Leaving Town: where did you get that word (unbelievably)? It
ANT in my dictionary. Incredible or unbelievable would be the right choice next time. Might have to do some night courses, reckon?
Santa commented at 4/3/2010 4:16:00 PM:
Don't worry about the wording or spelling. The main thing is to get the "EASTER BUNNY" out of jail in time to hide the eggs !!!
Leaving Town commented at 4/3/2010 4:29:00 PM:
Melody, try New Oxford or any other unabridged dictionary.
erika commented at 4/3/2010 5:46:00 PM:
Wow, the things that happen in Columbus. When I lived there, it was not this bad. I hate to hear what happened with the mayor and Kabir, but I have to ask, what did he do to make the mayor go after him like that? I see a lot of you saying he should have walked away or handled it better, seriously? you wouldn't have. We all know that views are all different, if you want to bring up race and money, bring up religion too. These are two men who had a disagreement the victim may have gotten tired of being bullied. It is stuff like this that makes it hard for those who have moved away to have a normal life because people in other states think that Mississipians are stupid. Focus on what is important, the children. This is just plain stupid. To you who have dogged how bad Robert Smith is, why don't you run for his position if you think you can do better.
"REAL" commented at 4/3/2010 5:48:00 PM:
Think about when you were young or when you were working and your co-worker Gossiped.
Writing comments are the same thing!!!!!!! Stop judging one another, let the law be the law and let your vote work. But you don't have to trash innocent or good people for a mistake. Everyone act like they are so good or so on a higher level that a mistake is beneath them. We all make mistake, we just need to learn from them and pray that they have and give it to GOD.
Gossip To God not each other!!!!!!!
erika commented at 4/3/2010 5:52:00 PM:
I so agree with you leaving town. Again, I cannot stress that this is why Columbus is at the bottom and most states(Texas) think that people from Mississippi are stupid. They still see MS as that racist state it was half a century ago.
IIS commented at 4/3/2010 6:03:00 PM:
They should just take the old bridge over to columbus scrap and sell it. Hey, take our politians with it and scrap them too--from local levels to the white house, they are all a bunch of lying criminals.
Real commented at 4/3/2010 8:16:00 PM:
@Concerned yeah both of them prolly should have been charged, i didnt one time say they shouldnt have..i said there were plenty of ways to handle that matter, but things happen...
@ward5 you really need to find you something to talk about cause your stories arent even clear...you talking bout big k this and big k that, thats the main reason why big k got what he asked for!
Concerned commented at 4/3/2010 9:08:00 PM:
I do believe if both of them were charged with disturbing the peace then we would not have any more problem out of those two. Of course that leaves Leroy Brooks. He could easily be charged for his actions at a board meeting. If he reads the law carefully it pretty much says any loud, insulting, indecent, offensive, boisterous conduct, or intimidation. That pretty much covers him.
Then they would be forced to use good sense. Then maybe Columbus can move ahead and make progress instead of this idiotic behavior we see day in and day out.
feed up commented at 4/3/2010 9:21:00 PM:
If you can be a better job why don't you run for office. Or have you already done that and got spanked! You may be right on some of the politians but all of them are not a bunch of lying criminal. This is why we only have a few good people running for office. Why not try a women next time. PS I happen to be a man. If you don't vote don't bitch!
rita commented at 4/3/2010 9:45:00 PM:
Is it true Bill Gavin is going to play the part of the "EASTER BUNNY"? At least he is doing something to improve the situation. All the others are sitting on their A$$. Go Bill for Mayor!
JR commented at 4/3/2010 9:48:00 PM:
Amazed, astounded, shocked. This feeling is nothing new for columbus. For the past 6 months columbus has been shown a pattern from its leadership. The mayor, city council and other city leaders actions have made a buffoonery of the people of Columbus. Four police officers made fools of themselves in Vicksburg, they were suspended. A firefighter was late to a class and was fired. Then another Police officer came into work drunk, carrying a firearm and driving a city vehicle and was just suspended. Where is the structure in this city? Where are the leaders? This city is never going to turn around untill this riff raff is ran out of this city. This city is never going to change untill we get the thugs and trash off the streets. The mayor and city councilman should remove themselves from office immediately! Our mayor is a complete buffoon, nimwit, jerk, nincompoop, simpleton. The city council and leaders of this city are not far behind. I say kick there rearends off into the street and break up the back door deals our city thugs are making with the cops. and showing our children how to act and strive to grow up to be one day.
Taxpayer commented at 4/3/2010 10:35:00 PM:
The nation is bankrupt, the state is bankrupt, the local governments are hurting. Why do we need to invest taxpayer's money on an old stupid bridge to walk across. There are plenty of places for people to walk without spending any more money. Maybe the taxpayer's money is worth fighting for. And yes, I am a taxpayer.
Mrs. M commented at 4/4/2010 1:39:00 AM:
Katrina? Seriously? Not a little dramatic? Two grown men got in a fight. It's a misdemeanor. At worst.
Kabir went to the ER over it? Please.
No one needs to resign over this, although if I were Kabir, I wouldn't show my face for a while. Guess we'll see all the damage Monday.
Have a sense of humor. Would Obama do this? Probably not, but I bet Truman would've laid him out!
betty commented at 4/4/2010 8:55:00 AM:
Why not bring Mr Gavin in as Mayor. I think that would help to get over this MESS!
Pilgrim commented at 4/4/2010 9:07:00 AM:
Between elected officials fighting and gangs, we are *seriously* re-thinking buying a house over your way and retirement in Columbus.
Rob commented at 4/4/2010 9:20:00 AM:
This thread is proof that there should be basic test given before people are allowed to vote. The test should include basic GED subjects such as spelling and grammar. If you cannot articulate your thoughts well in writing you should not be deciding who governs you. That should be left to the educated.
