The Lowndes County Sheriff''s Office confirmed today Columbus Mayor Robert Smith was arrested on assault charges stemming from an altercation with Ward 5 City Councilman Kabir Karriem, Thursday.
Smith, who is charged with misdemeanor simple assault, turned himself in at the Lowndes County Sheriff''s Office at 4:30 this afternoon.
Karriem, who could not be reached for comment, filed an affidavit against the mayor, who he says attacked him during a heated argument at City Hall.
Columbus Chief Operations Officer David Armstrong said he could not elaborate on the incident, but he did say that it was "a very bad situation ... absolutely inexcusable."
According to sources, Karriem sought treatment at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle after the incident, which occurred between 9-9:30 p.m. Baptist officials could not confirm that Karriem went to the hospital.
Smith has been released on bond; his preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 27.
Columbus Police Chief Joseph St. John said he turned the matter over to the county for investigation.
"I felt it was the proper thing to do in this situation. That is all I can say about that," he said.

Time for both the Mayor and the Councilman to RESIGN. Such behavior is unbecoming of an elected official. Both men are an embarrassment to the City of Columbus and all the law-abiding citizens in every ward of this city.
Every minute both of them stay in office hurts the image of this city.

Its so funny that Karriem has filed charges against another man for assaulting him. How many times has Karriem beat his wife and then fled the area to avoid being arrested??? I think its time to get rid of Karriem once and for all.

Now look what we have here.....if Kabir beats his Wife he should be voted out...but having met Mr. Smith, I would have to say yes He is A True Black Cowboy, but He is always fair.... hard but Fair. So, I think that karriem probally provoked him by doing something as silly as pointing his finger in his face and lets say that this is going on during a heated Debate....What do you expect? Now on a professional level, Smith was dead wrong!

How can Kabir press charges against the mayor, when he came to the mayor office with the intention to fight mayor Smith? The mayor just protected himself. Why couldn't Kabir be a man and wait to talk to the mayor, when he wasn't angry. Mayor Smith, should press charges against Kabir for provoking him and making him look bad before his people as mayor of this city.

Do the leaders in our towns still attend church and pray, do they take the time to read the Bible? Stop and think about it, just where are we headed, what road are we on? This is Passover and Easter, go to church and repent, then go complete a good anger management course.. Be responsible to the city thet elected you to lead them.

I think most of us who went to Columbus city schools know Robert Smith is a very patient and very fair man. If he managed to keep his temper in check with hostile teens for all those years, I can't believe he would simply lose control with Kabir Kareem without a really good reason.

"some times when you can't reason"
That is a prime example of what I am talking about. If the mayor or council had brains they could reason. Of course I couldn't expect someone like you to understand that. And also that is a prime example of why I compared their behavior to animals. Animals lack the inability to reason.
Thom Geiger commented at 4/3/2010 12:03:00 PM:
During the mayoral campaign, one of the points in my platform
was a proposed Code of Conduct for every elected and appointed official of the city. No one was to be exempt from it and everyone would be subject to the provisions in it.
There was a sample of one on my campaign web site which included specific consequences that would result from violations of the code.
I first proposed the idea of a city Code of Conduct as a candidate for city council, when the city was having problems with the behaviour of a certain council member.
A few people said such a thing wasn't needed, since the state has ethical laws in place, but this instance is a good example of the type of circumstances that should be covered by misbehaviour on the part of any elected or appointed official. Maybe with this latest lapse in professional conduct, the taxpayers might yet see some serious consideration of the idea.
The sample COC on I mentioned during the campaign can be seen at

I think Columbus and the Golden Triangle in general is a great area. I've lived here off and on for the last few years, and am here most of the time now, and there are a lot of really nice people here. I have however, come to the realization that two extremes seem to exist, maybe not just in this area, but more so in this area than a lot of places. On one hand, there are lots of great businesses, good places to shop and eat, colleges, the U, and State right down the road, we have technology thats moving the world so fast that the things of yesterday's science fiction are now becoming realities in blink of an eye, (FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE?)and that I feel is one extreme, the vessels of ever existing and proportionaly increasing change. But the other extreme that I see here is what makes my useless chatter on-subject. I see in the midst of all this "progression" a LOT of people who are unwilling to make the RIGHT kind of changes. All the technology in the world can't save us from ourselves and our own demons. And it seems to me that its time for the people of Columbus to make a decision. And that includes the elected and other existing leaders, in fact especially the leaders. I'm not taking either side here, and I'm not saying get rid of either one of them. Thats just more of that extreme thinking on both parties involved that caused this whole thing. Think of the future of your loved ones that live here, and everwhere. Compromise. And when you can't find a way to do that, MOVE ON to something else and when you get something else accomplished TOGETHER, try again to find compromise. ALL RELIGIONS teach that. Violence solves NOTHING. Neither does provocation. Turn your energies toward the proper direction to accomplish the goals you were put into office to accomplish. PEOPLE ALL OVER ARE SUFFERING! PEACE. -S.H. READ JOHN 3:17 most people stop with the verse before that.
Concerned commented at 4/3/2010 1:14:00 PM:

Hey bout time read these state laws and tell me which ones you do not understand. Then tell me if either one of the officials were not guilty of breaking these laws. Then answer this question. Why was neither one of these people charged these crimes as well as the assault charges that were brought forth by Councilman Kabir Karriem.
§ 97-35-13. Disturbance in public place.
Any person who shall enter any public place of business of any kind whatsoever, or upon the premises of such public place of business, or any other public place whatsoever, in the State of Mississippi, and while therein or thereon shall create a disturbance, or a breach of the peace, in any way whatsoever, including, but not restricted to, loud and offensive talk, the making of threats or attempting to intimidate, or any other conduct which causes a disturbance or breach of the peace or threatened breach of the peace, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be fined not more than five hundred dollars ($500.00) or imprisoned in jail not more than six (6) months, or both such fine and imprisonment.
§ 97-35-15. Disturbance of the public peace or the peace of others; exception.
(1) Any person who disturbs the public peace, or the peace of others, by violent, or loud, or insulting, or profane, or indecent, or offensive, or boisterous conduct or language, or by intimidation, or seeking to intimidate any other person or persons, or by conduct either calculated to provoke a breach of the peace, or by conduct which may lead to a breach of the peace, or by any other act, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by a fine of not more than Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) or by imprisonment in the county jail not more than six (6) months, or both.
(2) The act of breast-feeding shall not constitute a breach of the peace.
(3) The provisions of this section are supplementary to the provisions of any other statute of this state.
Now you tell me where either one of these elected officials (Karriem and Smith) has the intelligence to be granted the right to serve me and every other citizen of Columbus? Does Karriem not realize that his threatening the mayor was just as bad as the mayor getting physical? Karriem invaded the mayors personal space by pointing his finger in his face and trying to intimidate the mayor which according to state law is a crime.
Now if both of them are guilty of this crime then why were they both not charged with "Disturbance of the public peace" of § 97-35-13 and § 97-35-15?
Continue watching wild kingdom and letting the chickens teach your kids how to strut. I'll stick to state laws. Again they were acting like animals.
Thom Geiger commented at 4/3/2010 1:32:00 PM:
@Concerned; that's my point.
How many times do our city officials have to be caught committing unethical, illegal, outrageous, immoral and/or inexcusable behavior while in office until we decide enough is enough? The list is long, too long already- does it all need to be listed here? Crack houses, cell phones, spousal abuse, theft of taxpayer money, taking bribes and extortion, sexual harassment and the list goes on and on. Many of us think the time is past due for a remedy to what is obviously a terminal lack of good judgment on the part of immature local officials.
These individuals, by virtue of being public officials, are adults, not children. They shouldn't need apologists to excuse their behavior and never does one wrong excuse another wrong- two wrongs don't make either one right and apologists are enablers. Stop enabling these individuals. Let these people stand on their own, answer on their own, face any consequences on their own, be it from the public taxpayers or the press or in a court of law. They are not babies, even if they choose to act like it.
Let's not give them a choice (as our local officials apparently default to whatever satisfies them at the moment) or leave it up to discretion (as we can see how some don't have it or know how to use it) as to how they will or won't act. This is a clear example of what happens when we do.
Concerned commented at 4/3/2010 1:45:00 PM:
The only way it will stop is if our local law enforcement starts enforcing the laws.
It's not racism. It's not pointing fingers.
It's enforcing the law.
Again their reactions is just a small sign of their incapabilities to reasonably do the job that they were elected to do.

I've known Robert (coach Smith) for many many years personally. Many years ago ( about 15 or 16 ) I had a disagreement or a strong difference of opinion with Robert. I confronted Robert that day. I got in his face and pointed fingers and called names and cursed and said some things that I am ashamed I said to any human being in anger. Nevertheless I said them and shortly there after regretted it. see I didn't get the reaction I was looking for. Robert had every reason to lash out at me that day and react violently tword me but he didn't. he asked me to be a bigger man and walk away. after some thought I did just that. he gave me time to cool down and then approached me to discuss the difference and explain the decision he had made. He gained my respect that day and has never lost it. Robert and I still have dealings with each other from time to time to this day and he always treats me with respect and professionalism. what ever took place at city hall had to be unavoidable on Roberts part in my opinion. And its just that. my opinion.

In case you don't know the difference in the mayor and the law enforcement officers ... by them doing that to a law enforcement officer would have had them locked up quick. It's one thing to do it to a citizen but from my experience the law doesn't like it at all when you do it to them.
What's your point? LOL There were no excuses for their actions. Even the witness said so.
Concerned commented at 4/3/2010 2:24:00 PM:

I'm sorry. I didn't take into consideration that you might not understand what a law enforcement officer is. Let me explain. He is a person who was given the "power to enforce the laws".
Then you have the people who "interpret the laws".
And then you have people who "make the laws".
Let me know if there is something you don't quiet understand and I will be more that happy to help you understand it.
L.A. commented at 4/3/2010 2:34:00 PM:
I am not in approval of their actions only that what's done is done. A good lesson to learn from all of it is as stated. When we as a people choose violence instead of love, respect and understanding. Even when it hurts to do so we all suffer from it. Why don't you forgive them, pray for them, and hope they have learned a valuable lesson. When we do something wrong whoever we may be or what ever position we hold we, in most instances, we will have to pay for our actions. David in the I Samuel chapter 11 learned that lesson. Let us spread a good message to our community and send that to those who were involved. Work like it depends on us but pray like it depends on GOD. Then, leave it alone. What will be done will be done!

The bible teaches us that that we are to create a judicial system and submit to our governing authority. That means part of submitting to that governing authority is abiding by the rules of the governing authority. Part of the rules in the governing authority also presents fines and consequences for one's actions.
Please understand L.A. that I appreciate your use of God's words and I'm sure God feels the same. But it doesn't say we should look over the actions of these city officials. In fact it says we will still be accountable for out sins (or actions).
So this isn't something that needs "looking over". It needs addressing and appropriate actions put in place to prevent it from happening again.
I've included below a passage from the bible that I hope you will enjoy :)
Quote from Romans chapter 13
1Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.
The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling
against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

Respect and provocation! Sometimes it takes more of a man to walk away from a fight than to become a partner to it. Any fool can start a provocation. Respect is something you earn by the way you live or act toward your fellow man. Because you walk away from a fight no way affects your sense of respect for yourself or for your fellow man. I get so tired of hearing that this man or that disrespected someone. To earn someone's respect you must first learn to respect yourself. You must put forward the personna of someone who is due respect by your actions toward your fellow man. If you act a fool and start getting in someone's face in argument, you are doing little to earn anyone's respect. If you disrespect yourself, how in the world can you expect anyone to respect you. Provocation may lead to more intense argument, but only threat of bodily harm or life threatening situations should lead to the use of physical force.

Look at the actions of the city and county officials. They are an embarrassment no matter what color they are. Who are we to decide whether a person needs a beatdown or not? Those who provoke and those who respond to altercations are weak minded individuals. I've had insults thrown at me and blows landed to spark altercation. The worldly person in me wanted to beat the crap out of the individual but thanks to Jesus I thought otherwise. We need Jesus back in the Golden Triangle. We are not in the Wild West, prehistoric times or the Middle Ages. This is a nation of civilized, intelligent human beings. Let's start acting like it. Please!

Stop judging one another, let the law be the law and let your vote work. But you don't have to trash innocent or good people for a mistake. Everyone act like they are so good or so on a higher level that a mistake is beneath them. We all make mistake, we just need to learn from them and pray that they have and give it to GOD.

Hello everybody, listen up! The dispatch is kind enough to make an OPINION page available. Everyone is free to state an OPINION, it's not a place to debate back and forth and back and forth and back and forth to try and impress each other with how much you know about everything . Just an OPINION page, that's all.

Man i think he got what was coming too him. Kabir knows he won his seat on the board off his brothers name! We don't want a choclate City, but that's what Kabir wants because I have heard him say it. The Mayor is fair to everyone black or white. Kabir has ONLY worked with his mother, he knows NOTHING about real life as a working man.
I just hate that the Mayor got mixed up with that fool!

Your opinion to address everyone is no different then our opinion addressing each other. You don't lead by example by setting a bad one (-: The Dispatch has also provided a means for identifying who one thinks is inappropriate, use that process. But don't share your opinion to tell others about sharing theirs ... just a thought.

Columbus is a joke. High School prinicipal paid his way out of sexual harssement charges, Superintendent put 1 million dollars in a football program that won 4 games in 2 years, city can't afford to finish building a new unnecessary middle school, city with the worst roads and drainage system, a poor police department that can't find a man that is walking the streets of Southside everyday. County supervisors who can't come together to agree even if they were on fire, to put out the fire. So racially divided it's not funny. We have 3 or 4 private school.

Lets see, I just got back from mowing mom's yard. What went on while I was gone? Oh I see I got called a stupid redneck LOL. See what I mean? They will keep coming at you with their ignorance. Their mayor made an idiot of himself and in his defense his supporters tries to drag everyone down to the same level of ignorance as he is. I see what's going on. If you can't beat 'em with intelligence then you can darn sure try to make them look as stupid as you. That way you won't be alone.
Tell me how you justify the mayor acting like an idiot and breaking the law and resorting to violence? Maybe it would be best if the mayor spoke for himself because the people speaking up for him isn't doing very well.
By the way ... what time does "The Wild kingdom" come on? I need to brush up on my social skills a bit.

I think here we have a great opportunity for the Dispatch to do the right thing and actually report the news of this town. I am looking forward to my Sunday paper and I can't wait to see the information the Dispatch will provide its readers concerning this story.
The truth is, the city of Columbus will soon be welcoming manyn visitors into the "Friendly City" for Pilgrimmage. Isn't it a shame these visitors will find this story to read throughout the week? Let's be clear that an elected official of any race or gender accepts the job with the understanding that they will and should be held to a higher standard. No matter who is at fault in this situation, in all honesty the disgrace is all the same that it even occurred. This town CAN NOT move forward, in soliciting large businesses and possibly even keeping this base open, with leadership that doesn't speak properly much less behave that way. Make a change Columbus! Everyone must vote when election time comes around, but do not cast a vote because of someone's skin color. It is essential that this town elects leaders who are truly qualified and capable to take us forward.

1. "Kind of reflects the same behavior we saw in New Orleans after Katrina hit. ***Chaos*** They don't have the brains to reason so they act like animals."
2. "I'm speaking the truth about those 2 idiots Mayor Robert Smith and Councilman Kabir Karriem. They acted like animals and both should be removed from office."
3. "He handled his job like an idiot and Mayor Robert Smith responded like an idiot."
4. "If the mayor or council had brains they could reason. Of course I couldn't expect someone like you to understand that."
5. "However I agree for some you have to spell it out."
6. "Another perfect example of someone who can't win an argument based on intelligence."
7. "No! I just refuse to let you drag me down to your level of ignorance."

It doesn't matter how big and bad you suppose to be all of that goes out the window WHEN YOU"RE AT WORK!!! This ignorance happened on my taxpaying time.
First off this is their job! How are you going to fight at your job, i'm sure we've all came in contact with an idiot at our job....AND HOW DID YOU REACT??? This is not right and for "YOU PEOPLE" to praise this behavior by saying "GO SMITH" "KABIR DESERVED IT" is appalling! YES councilman Karriem was clearly out of line for letting his emotion get the best of him but Mayor Smith could have just as easily took a step back and handled this situation like a PROFESSIONAL suppose to... I just smdh at it all. Its just ridiculous! I hope we don't continue to pay these idiots with my HARD EARNED MONEY!!! We (BLACK PEOPLE) can't get anywhere acting like the "MONKEYS" that we get call. Y'all giving folks something to talk about. JUST PLAIN IGNORANT!!!!!

THIS COULD BE THE BESR CITY IN THE STATE IF WE WORKED TOGETHER. IF WE DON'T -WELL I HATE TO THINK WHERE WE WILL END UP. WAKE UP COLUMBUS. THIS IS NOT A RACE ISSURE IT'S A COMMUNITY ONE.
Concerned commented at 4/4/2010 10:35:00 AM:
1) How many jobs will restoration of this bridge create for the community and,
2) How much revenue will this construction create for our local businesses as well as taxes from money being spent at our local businesses.
If it can create 10 jobs for our local work force then I would consider it a plus to renovate the bridge. As scarce as jobs are to find in construction and with people losing houses and cars and filing bankruptcy it seems like it could still be a worthwhile project if it creates revenue and jobs and prevents people from filing bankruptcy.

The K man was standing up for what he thought was best for Columbus. He had the guts to do it. The Mayor didn't have to do what he did unless K punched him first. The Mayor was the bully this time and should step down. Lost all credibility in my book. K has every right to press charges and sue the Mayor. Wouldn't you?

Robert Smith never meant the City of Columbus nor the people in Columbus any good, But that's what yall get for voting for him just because he is black. Kabir never should of gotten tied up with him any way (he is not on your level and never will be). This man (Robert) has done so much in this town to blacks and covered it up, until it is not real. I didn't vote for him then and never will.He was okay as long as he was going to Mama's kitchen getting those free plates for lunch.
Sergeant commented at 4/4/2010 5:09:00 PM:
I just finished reading most of the "posts" in the Sunday paper about the Mayor and Councilman and I really can't believe that some in the city have condoned and/or excused the actions of both of these elected officials and men. Yes they are just human and they do make mistakes however the "mistake" that the mayor made is inexcusable. You are talking about a man that is in effect the "CEO" of our city. He is supposed to be our elected leader of the city and not some thug that settles disputes with violence. I don't care if Mr. Karriem had jumped up on the Mayor's desk and stuck a finger in his face. Mr. Smith should have been the bigger man and not done anything.
One post talked about whenever an elected official "jay walks" we call for their resignation. Well we aren't talking about them jay walking. We are talking about a mayor putting a councilman in a headlock to the point where he had to seek medical attention. For that I AM calling for the Mayor's resignation. There may, in fact, be a time and place for a violent altercation but in the Mayor's office is NEVER the place. Our elected officials are in fact elected to serve us and make decisions and therefore they are our employees and we have every right to call for their resignation when they do something like this.
If I had an employee where I work that put another employee in a headlock over something then I would fire them on the spot. This is no different.
The mayor needs to resign and let a person that will not fly out of control when confronted with a person that doesn't agree with them regradless of how they disagree.
Matt commented at 4/4/2010 5:50:00 PM:
They both should resign. Add another voice to the list calling for it.

I can't believe we get a black Mayor and he goes and makes a fool of himself. It makes me think about how I will vote next time. Then there is the cancilman that has that radio show that should be taken off the air. I aint never heard such foolishness in all my life. If a white man did that they would have him thoen out of town. If this mess dont stop we all will be back 20 years. I never though I would live to see all this mess in my life time. I am over 80 years old and I just hope this will all go away. I aint never going to listen to that radio show again. I am going to look for someone else to vote for next time. Some one else said Mr kerriem was going to run for mayor next time. I think that would be a waste of time. We got to fix this mess right now. Where are these two people now any way. They need to show their face and not hide no moore.

I am writing you this letter in hope that maybe you will respond via US Postal Service. I don't know what is going on, but I think it is very unfair of you to refuse me a chance to know if you are my father or not. I have been waiting for 13 years at the end of this month to know the truth. I want a blood test. You said before that you wanted it too, but you have made me wait over a month for a response, and I am wondering if I am ever going to get one.
I want you to know something, I am SICK and TIRED of being treated like a stray dog that just showed up outside someone's door step. My entire family treats me like that, and now you too. Let me tell you something Mr. Geiger, it is not MY fault that I was conceived or that I was born. It was not MY fault that my mother did what she did or made the choices that she did. It was not MY fault you and my mother could not make your relationship work. I did not ASK to be born, did I? So how is it that I am the only hone suffering from this whole mess?
You keep saying how you and your wife have suffered, and how people have treated you. How about the way you have treated me? You slept with my mother, got her pregnant, married her, and then just tossed me out like yesterday's garbage. To this day you treat me like I am some nuisance filled stray dog that keeps scratching at your door for some reason. I want answers and it is YOUR responsibility to give them to me.
If you would have tried to find me... you would have found me. I have been in Mississippi for over 10 years now, when have I heard anything from you? I have tried to contact you several times, and all I have heard back is "if you contact us again, we will press charges for harassment" You are the epitome of hypocrisy Thom. You preach about truth, and facts to all of the people on your forums, but you have no idea what that word means do you?
If you were so interested in "facts" or so interested in the truth, you would be getting the blood test wouldn't you? But no, you are afraid that I am going to cause problems with your wife. YOU won't even tell me if I have brothers and sisters somewhere I don't know about. I know I do. Why won't you at least grant me that? I want to know Thom. I guess my first impression of you was wrong... you are not a smart and reasonable person, because if you were, you would be trying to resolve this issue, or at least paying some attention to it.
I am so tired of being treated this way by someone I don't even know, but I will not stop until I have the answers that I am looking for. What are you afraid of? That you neglected a part of you for 25 years? That you acted like she didn't exist and you knew where she was the entire time? I already told you what I want... when you so blatantly told me supposedly that I can not get money from you because you put in the divorce papers I couldn't have any money unless there was a blood test performed.
My opinions on that are that I don't care who a man thinks he is or isn't.... if there is a possibility that he fathers a child, he should step up and take care of that responsibility. It takes two people to have a child, not just one. My mother definitely did not impregnate herself. You came looking for me when you were running for office for some reason last year.
You told the people you talked to that you knew I was your daughter, and I looked just like your sister. There really isn't any question in your mind about it but let me quote you from your last email "my conscience is clear" can not be true because if it is you are a heartless man. I have been an outcast my entire life because my "father" left me. I was never dales real daughter and no one saw it that way, my mother's family didn't accept me because they never accepted you.
Point being Thom, I want my chance. I DESERVE to know if you are my father or not!! I have tried and tried to get in contact with you and get this solved, but you keep dodging me. Especially after I told you that I was rh- antibody. You know that affects less than 15 percent of the population worldwide. So there is very little possibilities of someone that either of you knew being rh- as well that could have been my father. It would have been a freak occurrence. I am going to keep sending this letter, I am going to keep trying to get in contact with you until you get what you wanted... a blood test... I know now that you will never let me in your life, or in your heart, or share any kind of emotional attachment to me.
You make known publically your views on other races.... But all the things that you claim to be upheld in other communities...and trademarks of what you think they are like "dead beat dads" you need to go look in the mirror at yourself. I am tired of you and your holier than thou attitude, I am tired of you thinking that you decide when things happen like you are some kind of ruler over my life.
You slept with my mother, you married her... you are on my birth certificate... you have an obligation to me whether you like it or not. I am not some poor uneducated person you can persuade to believe anything that you want. You do have an obligation to me.... You owe me not only an explanation but the truth. My mother didn't make you stay away... my mother did not put a gun to your head and stay away from your daughter.... And even then most GOOD parents would have still pursued the issue...I guess that's just not something you will ever be is it?
I have four children and you have met and spent time with two of them.... When are you going to meet the other two? You can go and listen to my life from everyone I know, and not hear the truth from me? How is that right? Right now, I think that you came looking for me last year while you were running for office just because you wanted to keep drama down and you didn't want me to ruin things for you. Looks like I didn't have to do that, because from what people say, you do that on your own. You are no better than me, in fact I am a product of you. So in that sense, I am the best parts of you, at least that is how I see having children.
I will await your response....... You know how to get in contact with me!!
