An alleged burglar’s brief escape from custody caused Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District officials to lock down a nearby elementary school Monday.
SOCSD Superintendent Lewis Holloway confirmed Henderson Ward-Stewart Elementary School went on lockdown for about 15 minutes as Oktibbeha County deputies chased Alvin Davis III after he ran away from a police escort.
Davis, 28, of West Point, ran away from law enforcement agents about noon Monday after he was walked from the Oktibbeha County Jail to the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department for questioning, Sheriff Steve Gladney said.
“He was walking back down the hill to the jail when he kicked off his shoes and ran. He was still handcuffed and wearing (a jail-issued jumpsuit), so it didn’t take long to find him,” Gladney said.
Davis was arrested Sunday and charged with burglary. He will face an additional charge for the attempted escape, Chief Deputy Chadd Garnett said.
