Two people were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Hospital and two more are in custody following a police chase that ended with one vehicle in a ditch and another in a house Sunday afternoon.
Officers with the Columbus Police Department arrested Carlos Body, 33, of 1327 15th St. N., and James Williams, 30, of 301 Bishop Circle, after they fled in a vehicle from an officer who attempted to pull them over near Union Academy at about 2:50 p.m.
The officer smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to City Public Information Officer Joe Dillon. When he approached, the suspects drove off. The officer followed them for about three blocks until the suspects ran a stop sign at the intersection of 15th Street and 11th Avenue North and their vehicle collided with another.
Dillon said the second vehicle at the intersection T-boned the suspects’ vehicle. The suspects’ vehicle then flipped and landed in a ditch, while the other vehicle crashed into a nearby home.
The driver of the second vehicle and a senior citizen in the house were both taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, Dillon said. The driver was complaining of neck and back pain, and the resident fell and twisted her ankle trying to get out of the way of the car that crashed into her home.
Both Body and Williams have been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, Assistant Police Chief Fred Shelton said. Body was also charged with not having insurance.
Shelton said more charges for the suspects could arise as police continue their investigation.
Police also recovered a handgun in the vehicle, Dillon said, but at this time, no one has been charged for having it.
Both suspects remain in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. Bond had not been set by press time.
