Ole Miss has released New Hope senior defensive lineman Tae-Kion Reed from his national letter of intent, a spokesperson with the university has confirmed to The Dispatch on Thursday.
Reed, 19, was arrested Tuesday on a burglary of a dwelling charge after he allegedly broke into an acquaintance’s home on Richardson Road in the New Hope area on Saturday and stole about a dozen firearms. Three unnamed juveniles have also been arrested in the incident, according to Lowndes County sheriff’s deputies.
Reed was released from Lowndes County Adult Detention Center Wednesday after posting $10,000 bond.
An arrest affidavit The Dispatch obtained from Lowndes County Justice Court says the homeowners, a married couple, reported the burglary to police. The husband told deputies he and Reed were the only two who knew a particular handgun — which was taken — was kept in a certain dresser drawer. Another handgun, which Reed reportedly took from the top drawer of the same dresser, sat on top of $4,000 in cash. The affidavit, however, said Reed did not take the money.
Deputies have recovered several of the firearms, including five long guns stashed in bushes on William Roberts Road that Reed pointed out to investigators.
Reed, a standout offensive and defensive lineman for New Hope and a three-star recruit, signed with Ole Miss on National Signing Day on Feb. 1. During a ceremony at the school to announce his decision, he tossed a Mississippi State cap into the crowd before putting an Ole Miss cap on his head, a way of indicating he had chosen the Rebels over their in-state rival Bulldogs.
He also had offers from Louisiana-Lafayette, Memphis and Southern Mississippi.
New Hope head football coach Kris Pickle has not returned multiple calls and messages seeking comment.
