Tea Party rallies set for Tax Day

Tim Pratt

While citizens across the country file last-minute tax returns Thursday, members of the nation''s Tea Party organizations, including those in Columbus and Starkville, will rally to voice their displeasure with the federal government.

The Starkville Tea Party will hold a rally Thursday at noon in front of the Oktibbeha County Courthouse. The Columbus Tea Party will hold a rally Thursday at 5:15 p.m. on the Lowndes County Courthouse steps.

Russ Latino, a conservative commentator, writer and attorney from Jackson, will be the featured speaker at the Starkville rally. Robert Allen, a conservative author and speaker, also will address the group.

In Columbus, Bryan Fischer, director of issue analysis for the American Family Association, is one of three scheduled speakers. The American Family Association "represents and stands for traditional family values and exists to motivate and equip citizens to reform our culture to reflect Biblical truth on which it was founded," according to the group''s Web site.

Henry Ross, who, in the past, has served as mayor of Eupora, assistant district attorney and circuit court judge, also will speak at the Columbus rally. Ross is running for Congress in Mississippi''s First Congressional District as a Republican.

Dr. John Whitecar, a medical oncologist at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, is scheduled to speak at the Columbus rally.

The topics planned for discussion in Starkville and Columbus range from health care reform and excess taxes to fiscal responsibility, free enterprise and constitutionality, said Randolph Lipscomb, vice chairman of the Columbus Tea Party. Lipscomb is encouraging Golden Triangle residents to attend either of the local rallies.

"We just had the health care bill pass and it''s not a threat to liberty, it''s a taking of liberty," Lipscomb said. "If people have any interest in retaining their liberties as American citizens and not becoming American subjects, they should be at these rallies."

When asked how health care takes away citizens'' liberties, Lipscomb said the federal government is "forcing" the policy on tax payers.

"You''re compelled to purchase a product ... and it''s a product you may not even want," he said. "If the government can tell you what you have to buy and what it has to look like and mandate what goes into it, is there anything they can''t force you to do?"

The rallies in Columbus and Starkville are expected to last about an hour, but they could last longer, Lipscomb said. Citizens will have the opportunity to speak and ask questions at both rallies.

"We''re just giving people a chance to come out and stand up as patriots and speak out," said Gary Chesser, one of the organizers of the Starkville Tea Party. "A lot of voters are really energized by this (movement). There''s a lot of anger out there. We just want to make sure people are fully equipped to make the right decision when it comes time to vote."

Chesser said the Tea Party movement isn''t designed to overthrow the government.

"None of our people advocate any sort of violence or government overthrow," he said. "This is just a grassroots movement to try to educate and inform the public." chairman of the Columbus Tea Party. Lipscomb is encouraging Golden Triangle residents to attend either of the local rallies.

I wonder if any of the tea party goers realize that the vast majority of the people in the movement have received a tax cut under President Obama? Where was the tea party when George Bush was giving health coverage to all Iraqis? Where were they when George Bush was spending hundreds of billions of dollars on an unnecessary war?

You must be one of the lucky few that make over 250,000 a year because anyone making less got a tax cut from our president. If you do make over 250k I must shed a tear for you for your taxes going up 3% a year. How will you ever make it? Especially on a tax rate that is lower then Ronald Raegan or was that something that you were not aware of?

Article Comment hk commented at 4/14/2010 2:38:00 PM:

Have you ever been hired by a poor person? we have to have people that are more wealthy than others--he is just going to take more from them--then they will not be able to hire as many of us to work or to pay us much. Everything is going up--so I guess we will have to look to our govt. for some more handouts.

Why don't we not tax the wealthiest people at all then hk and be like haiti. I hope we can stop what he has put in motion before it can really take hold and ruin the USA. And why is FOX so bad? I guess what your saying is that all the other networks are right and only FOX has it wrong. I don't buy it. I want Obama and all his democratic senate, house, and congress gone in November 2010. Article Comment woodnut commented at 4/14/2010 9:16:00 PM:

Obama's health insurance rule was a GOP idea. Republicans were for President Obama's requirement that Americans get health insurance before they were against it. The obligation in the new health care law is a Republican idea that's been around at least two decades. It was once trumpeted as an alternative to Bill and Hillary Clinton's failed health care overhaul in the 1990's. These days Republicans call it government overreach.
Mitt Romney , weighing another run for the GOP presidential nomination, signed such a requirement into law at the state level as Massachusetts governor in 2006. At the time, Romney defended it as "a personal responsibility principle" and Massachusetts' newest GOP senator, Scott Brown, backed it. Romney now says Obama's plan is a federal takeover.
Its not the fact that this healthcare plan was a republican idea, its the fact that it came from President Obama.

Article Comment diamondgirl commented at 4/14/2010 9:36:00 PM:

The GOP's ties with extremists are only helping the Dems. It's worked to the Republicans' advantange that the media portrays the Tea Party as a "monolithic grassroots uprising," when it's actually a "relatively small bunch of political extremists." And when swing voters increasingly see the "ugliness and violence" for themselves on the news, they'll be "turned off as hell".

Article Comment M.C. commented at 4/15/2010 1:02:00 AM:

The GOP has realized they can't possibly gain enough seats in November to "repeal and replace" with a veto override, so they have no choice but to ask the Supreme Court if the Court plans to enfore the health care laws passed by the Congress by filing suit against the government. Last time I checked, the Constitution gives the Congress the authority to enact legislation and the Supreme Court the authority to enforce that legislation. But, the tea bags are still trying to scare the American people into believing the health care reforms are a bad thing and only for their own political gain. So, the GOP is about to waste a lot of money suing its own government when it should be supporting the law of the land and spending that money on a search for someone to represent their party besides Palin. I prefer my tea bags in boiling water anyway.

Bush could hardly have been farther off base when he said most of his tax cuts "went to low- and middle-income Americans." That's just not true.

In fact, the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center recently calculated that most of the tax cuts -- 53% to be exact -- went to the highest -earning 10% of US individuals and families. Those most affluent Americans got an average tax cut of $7,661.

And as for the "low- and middle-income Americans" Bush mentioned -- the bottom 60% of individuals and families got only 13.7% of the tax cuts, according to the Tax Policy Center, a far cry from "most" of the cuts as claimed by Bush.

Anything else?

Matt, Barry is no Bill Clinton. Clinton was actually not only a shrewd politician, but a student of economics (attended the prestigous London School of Economics). He was right when he said, "It's the economy, stupid". Barry only knows giving free stuff to people who in no way earned it, and also putting a "kick me" sign on America's back. Wise up, bud. Barry has never had a real job. Barry is an intellectual lightweight in so many areas (and you libs laughed at George Bush, guess what they both went to Harward). Barry still won't release his transcripts, so he tells you he's smart and you believe him. What a bunch of sheep. Does it not bring vomit to your mouth in the least to see your President bowing to everyone from the Saudi king to the Mayor of Tampa?

The president of the united states is not a real job? You guys are getting really pathetic. An intellectual lightweight? lmao I guess when mit romney is the presidential candidate you won't vote for him either? You are aware that mit romneys healthcare plan is almost identical to Obamas? I'm sure you don't believe he was born in the country either and I'm sure you probably believe in santa and the easter bunny. Not quite what the word "Liberal" is suppose to mean, huh? From their comments, I would assume that James, Hope, and M.C. would describe themselves as Liberals. People claiming to be Liberal have been making comments like these for a long time. I'm encouraged that more reasonable people are becoming engaged and speaking up. For too long the so called Liberals have dominated the discourse.

Article Comment hope commented at 4/17/2010 8:33:00 AM:

The conservatives say that the federal government should not intrude upon the rights of the states on just about every subject, but if that intrusion prevents the states from protecting their citizens from the greed of those few that the Republicans actually and truly represent, then it is okie/dokie.I wish that the American people would finally learn that the Republicans do not represent the American people one second past the close of polls on election day.
It points out another little hypocrisy of the right/Republicans.

Article Comment Lance commented at 4/17/2010 9:32:00 AM:

Matt, even if your numbers are true, who cares. You can't legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of it. You should be proud to live in a country with an opportunity for wealth. Are their some people who do it dishonestly? Sure, but some of them have worked hard their entire lives and deserve what they have earned. Who do you think provides jobs and pays wages? The highest earners do. If you raise taxes on the rich, do you think they are gonna eat the loss? No, they are gonna start dropping employees. I hope that if this happens you will lay your head on the chopping block because you know higher taxes on the rich are a good thing.
