On April 4, Payless Shoesource filed voluntary Chapter 11 petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, followed by the release of a list of 400 stores that are closing.
Columbus and Starkville Payless locations, in the Leigh Mall and at Starkville Crossing, respectively, were not among the eight Mississippi locations announced to close.
Another major chain going through bankruptcy with locations in the Golden Triangle is Radio Shack. Although Radio Shack has yet to announce the Columbus location as a potential loss in its closings, an employee with the electronics store did confirm the store was closing, though no date is available at this time.
On the brighter side of things, Second and Seven, a finance strategy firm, has been named a winner of the SCORE American Small Business Championship.
Paul and Karina Dorn opened Second and Seven in April 2016. Second and Seven strives to be a business that goes beyond numbers with a human-centered approach.
Starkville is gaining a home brew supply shop at 436 Highway 12.
Chris North is planning to open the Smiling Frog Brewing Supply on April 15. The store will occupy a 1,500 square-foot space near Denny’s restaurant.
North took up home brewing in the 1990s while employed as an oil field engineer in Texas. After retiring, North’s wife became employed with MSU. Since the move, the Norths have been planning to open a supply shop.
In West Point, the Dollar General at 20994 Hwy. 50 W. opened on March 31.
A grand opening will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday with free prizes and special deals for customers. These prizes include gift cards for the first 50 shoppers and 200 Dollar General tote bags with product samples.
The store’s hours are 8 a.m.-10 p.m. seven days a week.
