The former Caledonia High School band director accused of sexual misconduct with students turned himself in to authorities Monday morning, according to Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Marc Miley.
David Tawan Chambers, 42, faces charges of fondling and computer luring of a minor for sexual purposes. He was released from Lowndes County Adult Detention Center later Monday after posting $20,000 bond, a jail official confirmed.
The sheriff’s office opened an investigation on Feb. 24 after parents and district administrators alleged he engaged in sexual misconduct with students. LCSO has previously confirmed to The Dispatch that Chambers is suspected of misconduct involving several high school students.
Mississippi 16th Circuit Judge Jim Kitchens issued an arrest warrant for Chambers on the two charges on Thursday after holding a probable cause hearing in Lowndes County Circuit Court. Chambers, according to a LCSO press release issued the next day, was not present at the hearing.
The same release said misconduct also may have happened in Batesville and Oxford while Chambers traveled for school functions.
Chambers resigned from his job on Feb. 24. The Lowndes County School District Board of Trustees accepted his resignation at a March 10 board meeting.
He was employed at the district for more than seven years.
School district administration has routinely declined to comment on the investigation. Calls to Chambers have gone unreturned.
