The Lowndes County Democratic Executive Committee will host a forum for Democratic municipal election candidates this evening.
The forum starts at 6 p.m. at the municipal complex on Main Street. Executive Committee Chairman Leroy Brooks said the committee has invited every Democrat running in the city’s elections to attend the forum.
Brooks said the forum will consist of two panels. One panel, featuring Lowndes County Emergency Management Director and DEC executive committee member Cindy Lawrence and local journalist Steve Rogers, will ask questions to mayoral candidates. In the second, DEC executive committee members Tyrone Cunningham, Kabir Karriem and Carrie Stephenson, will pose questions to city council candidates. The forum will not include questions from the public.
Brooks said the council candidates will be split into a group of incumbents and a group of challengers, and the groups will be questioned separately.
“We think it’s very important that people engage themselves in the municipal election,” Brooks said. “That’s one of the reasons the executive committee is hosting the forum — to give people a chance to come out and hear what these candidates have to say.”
Every candidate will be allowed to make opening and closing statements. Brooks said the forum is expected to last about an hour and a half.
