An inaugural Sunday Funday takes place Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Starkville’s Cotton District. Organized by The Greater Good Collective, the Funday brings together artists, musicians and local organizations for an afternoon of art, live music and community involvement.
More than a dozen artists will display goods ranging from jewelry, pottery and homemade foods to larger paintings and clothing. Prices will range from just a few dollars for smaller items to a few hundred for pieces from established artists such as Joe MacGown and Paul Buckley.
Sunday Funday will take place every fourth Sunday to support the Golden Triangle’s unique creativity and to share information about community projects, organizers said.
The volunteer-based Greater Good Collective is co-chaired by Blair Edwards and Lindsay Runnels. Both are artists and longtime Starkville residents. Many other individuals and businesses are involved in providing resources, knowledge and elbow grease.
Developer Dan Camp and his son Robert Camp have been significantly instrumental in making Sunday Funday possible, according to a press release from the Collective. The Camps own the alleyway location where the first few events will be held.
Robert Camp said adding a strong arts element to the Cotton District has been something they have wanted to work toward for a while.
“We want to take a neighborhood that is already somewhat notable for some of its aspects and add a level of cultural diversity,” he said.
When Edwards and Runnels decided to start the Collective and Sunday Funday, the Camps were interested in an arts-focused, family-friendly event setting up shop in the Cotton District.
“Blair showed up and was very eager and invested,” Robert Camp said. “He was the person we had been looking for for years. This is (the Collective’s) time to shine. We are just providing a space for them to thrive.”
The Greater Good aims to “educate citizens and visitors about where we live and how to utilize and improve the community,” said Collective volunteer Taylor Bowden. “We grow and lead by example through initiating consistent dialogue on topics such as recycling, self sustainability, edible landscaping and anything else anyone thinks would make our community great.”
Sunday Funday will be in the Rue du Grand Fromage alleyway between Two Brothers Smoked Meats and Commodore Bob’s. The Cotton District is in the area of University Boulevard and Maxwell Street.
