A Lowndes County man has been arrested for the murder of his son.
Deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office took Larry Johnson, 69, of 46 River Lane, into custody Tuesday morning after Johnson called 911 to report he had shot and possibly killed his son at their home in the southern part of the county the night before, Chief Deputy Marc Miley said.
Authorities arrived at Johnson’s home shortly after 9:15 a.m. where they found the victim, 40-year-old Mitchell Drew Johnson, dead at the scene, Miley said. Deputies arrested Larry Johnson at the scene and have charged him with murder.
Miley said the suspect waited about 12 hours before calling 911.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant confirmed earlier Tuesday that Mitchell Johnson died after suffering a gunshot wound. Authorities will take Mitchell Johnson’s body to the State Crime Lab in Jackson for autopsy.
Miley said apparently the father and son had been involved in an altercation when Larry Johnson shot Mitchell Johnson, but he did not release specific details about a possible motive, saying only that it was a “domestic situation.”
Larry Johnson is scheduled to go before a judge today where his bond will be set. He is being held in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.
LCSO is still investigating the case, Miley said.
