WEST POINT -- The West Point Board of Selectmen fired former interim electric department superintendent Shasta Plunkett again Thursday.
The board met for its second April meeting and voted 4-1 to cut Plunkett, with Ward 4 Selectman Keith McBrayer casting the lone dissenting vote. Ward 1 Selectman Rod Bobo, who voted against firing Plunkett in March, declined to comment on the reason he changed his vote.
The board voted to fire Plunkett in March at a special-called meeting, but Mayor Scott Ross vetoed the firing, saying the meeting was illegal due to improper notice. During its first April meeting, the board voted unanimously to take the interim superintendent title from Plunkett, returning him to duty at the electric department warehouse and working as a lineman. Chief Administrative Officer Randy Jones, who serves as general manager to the Water & Light Department, has been fulfilling superintendent duties.
Jones was on vacation during the last meeting, but recommended Plunkett be stripped of the interim title via written correspondence.
The city of West Point has a job opening posted for the superintendent job, but Plunkett was the only person to apply for the job.
Plunkett has been at odds with the board for months. He is one of several current and former city employees with Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaints pending against the city.
In his complaint, Plunkett claims racial discrimination on behalf of the board. He also claims Ward 5 Selectman Jasper Pittman and two unnamed selectmen have had their power cut off in the past for not paying their bills and that Pittman told him explicitly selectmen should not be required to pay their bills.
Plunkett was also tried and acquitted on charges of disturbing the peace in October related to an incident in which an electric department customer accused Plunkett of harassing him regarding an overdue bill.
Pittman says multiple complaints have been received regarding Plunkett.

Yes Plunkett was tried and acquitted by a friend of his Judge Cliet. Wonder if it would have been the same if it were another judge? Maybe with any luck he will stay fired this time. Never know what Mayor might do.. Why not release all the facts and let us see just why? Oh wait they won't. Kind of like they did with the police chief..2 years ago and we still don't know..When will there be a job notice for his position or is there already someoone picked for it?
Shame shame shame. Our poor city.

The real question to me is..."Did any selectman not pay their electric bill?" If so who and why not?
Embarrassed to live in West Point commented at 4/23/2010 9:25:00 PM:
The board hired an electric Dept Supt at the same meeting that they fired Shasta. The question would be "which month DO they pay their bill on time?" it is usually Collins, Cannon, and pittman that do not pay, and right now with all the commotion, cut offs are being neglected.
JP commented at 4/23/2010 11:01:00 PM:
Who did they hire? The article says they still have the job opening posted.
DJ commented at 4/24/2010 6:20:00 AM:
Is it against some law to have utilities cut off and then back on? How many times does Plunkett have to be fired to stay fired? I know a lot of people other that those mentioned that don't pay on time or in full. And some that have had their gas turned off for not paying and got it turned back on during the weekend because they had "special" friends and that is against the law. So get off these guys backs. If they don't pay cut them off or fire the guy that doesn't. But treat everyone the same. Don't throw out these names cause you don't like them. This is not the only reason to be embarrassed to live in West Point. There's enough dirt here to bury us all.
JP commented at 4/24/2010 10:13:00 AM:
The gas company is private sector and not associated with the city DJ. What "law" are you referencing?
local commented at 4/24/2010 10:14:00 AM:
I myself have gotten behind or had trouble paying what was due to the electric. I'm sure a lot of others have too. It is not a crime. The person at fault is the one who does not do their job and cut it off if they have been notified it would be. Fire them. but don't put people down and blame them because they aren't paying on time or had it cut off. I am 100% sure these are not the only ones in this position if they are. So if it isn't a personal grude against these men or an attempt to make them look bad, don't call them out unless you want to list the names of all the others.

Bobo and Pittman (West Point city selectmen) filed police reports against Mr. Shasta Plunkett's FATHER Friday afternoon. Pittman's complaint stated that "Mr. Wayne Plunkett stood too close to me in an elevator at City Hall and Mr. Plunkett stared at me while on the elevator". Bobo's complaint stated that "Mr. Wayne Plunkett contacted my employer and stated that he would no longer do business with my employer". There were no charges filed against Mr. Wayne Plunkett because there were no laws broken. If no laws were broken, why was the police officer MADE to track down and notify Mr. Wayne Plunkett of these papers when their tax paying voters have been constantly complaining at the board meetings of not enough police patrol?? Now that they can't attack Mr. Plunkett at work, they are going after his family?? Mr. Plunkett was let go with no reason given. It makes you wonder if their reasons were as valid as the police reports they filed. West Point, this is our city selectmen hard at work.

Good old West Point, some things will never change, anybody worth their salt only gets beat down. Did Shasta do anything wrong, I don't know but it sounds like same old politics to me. One of these days the people of WP will wake and get rid of the "good old boys." Yea, about the same time Columbus does. I wouldn't hold my breath if I were yall, I'm not.
Sad for West Point commented at 4/24/2010 7:50:00 PM:
Mr. Pittman, Mr. Collins, Mr. Cannon, and finally Mr. Bobo, you must be so very proud of your "work" tonight. You have succeeded in ridding West Point of another qualified and honest worker. First the police chief: What was his offence? Did he arrest the wrong person or just arrest too many black people as one of the black officers has charged in his suit filed with Jim Waide against you.
And Shasta Plunkett: What did he do? In that "famous" trial he was said to have "disrespected" one of your own because he thought everyone should be willing to pay their electric bills. Any other unprejudiced judge would have found as Mark Cliett did because the case simply had no merit. Mrs. Lairy should have never allowed it to come to court in the first place.
And , since that ruling went against your racist agenda, you have harassed Shasta Plunkett unmercifully. (And now you are after his Father? Good grief! You sound like the little kids at school coming to the teacher to complain that "he is meddlin me".)
Shasta Plunkett is not a racist; but the 4 of you are. You think that because you were elected to a position and because you happen to be black , you should have special privileges. Well, in my opinion, elected officials should be held to a higher standard than the four of you have exhibited.
And, you, Mr. Bobo, I really expected better of you than that. When you sided the last time with Scott Ross , I thought, "Well, good, at least Rod Bobo is going to stand up for what is right." Well, I guess you fooled me! Aren't you the one who said that we would never find you "making a fool" of yourself in public. You just broke that promise, didn't you? You work with white people everyday and you sell cars to white people every day. Do you really hate white people so much that you have to side with three men who are genuine racists? What would be so very wrong with a black man standing up for the rights of another man who just happens to be white? And, in this case happens to be innocent of anything that should cause him to lose a job he has held for over 12 years.
I know that you think you have "won". Well, this story is not over. The final chapter has not been written. One day "right" will prevail over prejudice and hatred.
I feel truly sorry for the four of you. And I can't help but wonder just which city worker will be the next one to feel the hatred that you exhibit.
Please, stop this. You were elected to "serve" all of the people of West Point. So far, you have missed this goal entirely. So far, you have only brought shame and disgrace to our town.
And that is why I am so very "Sad for West Point". I'm not sure we can survive 3 more years of your "leadership".

It is not a black and white thing..It is right or wrong thing.

OK Local, tell us what why "Shasta got canned" as you put it. Why is the reasoning behind the firing of the Police Chief or Plunkett a big secret? Why not just publish the information? If it is justified, there should be no problem. Public employees fired by a public body, should be public record. Right?
To the other "lawyer" out there, specifically, what law did Atmos break? Got a state law section and paragraph number for us?
Sad for West Point commented at 4/25/2010 7:54:00 AM:
Shasta Plunkett didn't just wake up one morning to find out that he had been ELECTED to a job with no qualifications other than living in West Point.
Shasta Plunkett WORKED for that position. He STUDIED for that position. He was QUALIFIED for that position. The board made his dismissal a "black / white" thing because they had no reason to fire him other than the fact that he attempted to collect electric bills from EVERYBODY regardless of their skin color. Shasta Plunkett didn't make the rules for cut offs, etc. He was merely following the guidelines set out for him in the policy book that the board seems so intent on re-writing.
Bickering does no good. We need requirements for board memebers other than residency. Our board needs to be looking out for the good of West Point rather than trying to exact vingence on someone who has angered them because he chose to abide by the RULES ALREADY SET UP FOR HIM TO FOLLOW.

The comments in quotes below have to be the dumbest ever posted anywhere. Why would Ross answer for why the police chief was fired?? He didn't fire him !!! The board fired him and THEY won't give an answer. WOW, you are SO stupid. You honestly think Ross should be the one to answer for why the chief was fired when he didn't want him fired ??? You are too stupid to be walking around much less typing on the internet.
And for Plunkett, please tell us why he was fired! PLEASE !!!! This board is racist and if you think you are going to turn that around you are going to have to be able to put a thought together instead of the mess you are posting.
Now, as Mr. Epting asked, which selectmen didn't pay their electric bills??
I thought more of Bobo but I guess his people got to him.

All this fussing and fighting and name calling. Don't you understand there isn't a darn thing anyone of us can do unless all of us stand together and demand some answers and honesty. Since we are all aginst each other they will keep running this town as they see fit. And we can only yell at one another. We didn't do they did. Let's find a way to pack the board meetings and start demanding answers and if not then bring in someone who can get them for us.
Too Late commented at 4/25/2010 2:12:00 PM:
THINK, It's too late! This mess started the middle of last year when Plunkett ran the first disconnect list and everything hit! Has no one followed the Plunkett stories since last year? There have been numerous ones. As of today, not one has stated a reason for the harassing of him to continue except some of the selectmen were called out for being on the disconnect list and those who had not paid in a while now were being disconnected for non-payment.
Now someone wants to "pack" the board meetings. Why? Plunkett has been fired after 13 years with a clean personell file and such good work ethics that in turn earned him promotions?? Why go now? The house cleaning is almost complete! A female with absolutely no experience with office mgmt has been hired to oversee the office and the payments that are brought in, yet the only experience she has is cashier experience. A man w/ 13 years experience in the field and in the office, as well as over the top knowledge of TVA policies and procedures has been fired w/out a reason, a man has been hired for this position but still nothing is known of this man, the father of Plunkett has had papers drawn up on him for "standing too close to Pittman and staring at him in an elevator" and now our town should "pack" the board meetings and see whats going on. I will tell you whats going on, they just took over our town while we sat at home on the couch while watching TV. Shame on us!!
When I heard that Pittman was now attacking Plunkett's father, Wayne Plunkett, this is when my blood pressure rose. Wayne Plunkett is one of the finest men you will ever meet and I am disgusted that Pittman and Bobo filed papers on this man for the reasons they claim. WEST POINT, WE HAD BETTER WAKE UP B/C FILING PAPERS ON THIS MAN PROVES THEY ARE UP TO NO GOOD AND THEY ARE COVERING SOMETHING UP!!!!!!!! ARE THESE THE KIND OF REASONS WE ARE GOING TO GET FOR WHY PLUNKETT WAS FIRED??? HOW HUMILIATING FOR PEOPLE TO FIND THIS CRAP OUT ABOUT OUR TOWN................OUR SELECTMEN HARD AT WORK!!!
Sad for West Point commented at 4/25/2010 10:25:00 PM:
It will be three years before we can vote the selectmen out. What has to be done to IMPEACH THEM? I don't know but surely someone out there does. West Point will not survive three more years of this group. And, before more are elected, have someone draw up some kind of qualifications. We need selectmen with business sense, as well as with honesty and integrity. And,no, the color of these people should never be a consideration. There are many black people in West Point who have these qualifications. It is just a sad fact that these three do not. Rod Bobo is still the "wild card" that I don't understand. I think he is allowing the other three to influence him for some reason.
And, as to boycotting Mitchell Buick: What good would that do anyone? Rod Bobo is an employee there. The man he works for has no control over his actions. Yes, I guess he could be fired; but then Mitchell Buick would become a target and we surely don't need that. There has been enough harm done to West Point already.
And, yes, Wayne Plunkett is a Christian man with a kind heart. He would never be willing to do to these men or their children what has been done to his son. It is just unbelievable that he would be brought into this mess.
It IS time for us all to stand together. West Point should be known as a town where EVERYONE is RESPECTED. Where INTEGRITY and HONESTY is the norm. Where HARD WORK is rewarded rather than punished. Where a person is judged , not by the color of his skin; but by the color of his heart.
It may be too late to correct what has happened to Shasta Plunkett or Chief Bingham or the others already dismissed by this board. But, maybe we can keep it from happening to someone else.
LOCAL commented at 4/25/2010 10:28:00 PM:
