Zyterrious L. Gandy, the 19-year-old Starkville resident injured during an officer-involved shooting in June, will make his initial appearance in municipal court today after he was recently released from medical care.
Starkville Police Department served Gandy with four warrants Wednesday — three for aggravated assault and one for failing to stop a motor vehicle when signaled by an officer — and his bond was set at $35,000.
Gandy was taken into custody June 3 after an alleged shoplifting incident morphed into a vehicle pursuit with at least one round of gunfire from a SPD officer.
Law enforcement agents were dispatched to the Highway 12-South Montgomery Street Sprint Mart about 4:30 a.m. and began pursuing a vehicle driven by Gandy, who led a chase down South Montgomery Street to South Wedgewood Road.
A traffic stop was attempted there, Mississippi Bureau of Investigations spokesperson Warren Strain previously said, but Gandy, who was still behind the wheel at the time, backed into at least one SPD patrol vehicle, endangering officers’ lives.
At that point, at least one officer opened fire, Strain said.
Gandy then allegedly attempted to drive away from the scene but struck a residence’s porch.
It is believed another round of gunfire occurred then, Strain said in June.
The vehicle circled around the home, where Gandy allegedly abandoned the ride and attempted to flee the area by foot. He was caught a short distance away, Strain said.
Gandy was stabilized locally and airlifted for further treatment in Jackson.
Two days after the shooting, SPD Chief Frank Nichols announced an unidentified police officer was placed on paid leave.
Since the incident, both MBI and SPD have released few details as the state agency took control of the investigation.
