Excuses to play golf don”t get much better than this.
Proceeds from the Boys and Girls Club Celebrity Golf Benefit 2010 will fund summer programs at the Columbus and Starkville Boys and Girls Clubs.
The four-man scramble will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. at the Mississippi State University golf course May 22. The event was originally scheduled for April 24, but was delayed by inclement weather.
“We just wanted to keep our supporters out of harm”s way,” said Dr. Melvin Ray, board president for the Golden Triangle Boys and Girls Clubs.
That means golfers have another chance to sign up for a round of golf with some local celebrities from business, government and education. Think of it as big swings with big shots.
Registration is $150 per person or $500 per team. Players will have a chance to win some of their money back with cash prizes awarded to the Longest Drive, Longest Putt and Closest to the Pin winners.
The rest of the money will pay for summer programs at local chapters.
The Boys and Girls Club extends from opening for four hours during the school year to nine hours a day during the summer. Plus, they”ll keep academics at the forefront with science programs, art programs, reading programs, plus the usual games and recreation. Ray hopes to get an aviation education program aimed at older youth off the ground this summer with the help of instructors from Mississippi University for Women and MSU.
The clubs could also use volunteers to help serve the 300 area youth who use the local Boys and Girls Clubs on a daily basis.
“The Boys and Girls Clubs are the regional youth development resources that give the greatest return on investment in terms of empowering our youth to be all they can be,” said Ray.
Registration deadline for the golf tournament is May 20. Players and sponsors are being sought for the event. To sign up, call the Starkville Boys and Girls Club at 662-615-9980.
