COLUMBUS — Local volunteers Wednesday delivered supplies to Yazoo City for victims of an April 24 tornado, which killed four residents.
And more supplies are needed.
Kathy Cadden of Operation Ukraine and other volunteers took a truck loaded with supplies — nine rolls of roofing plastic, five boxes of roofing tacking nails, six pallets of bottled water, a pallet of sheets and blankets and a half-pallet of new baby clothes, formula, diapers, wipes and first-aid supplies — to Yazoo City, where The Broadway Church of Christ of Yazoo City serves as the official distribution site for the disaster area.
“Operation Ukraine not only sends humanitarian aid to other countries, but we also help here at home, too,” Cadden said of the organization, which is in its third year of operations as a nonprofit charitable organization.
Cadden first began shipping boxes of supplies to Ukraine and other countries in 2000.
“It took me hours to find contact numbers of contacts in Yazoo City, as land lines were down,” she recalled. “Sherill and Suzanne Bennett of Lone Oak Church of Christ helped pack the load and accompanied me. James Coburn and Jimmy Coleman helped to load the truck. Much thanks to Bruce Johnson with Real Deal Grocery for loaning us the truck.”
A “big need” was for rain tarps to cover houses to protect them from additional bad weather, Cadden added, noting Jack Chilcut of New Home Building Stores helped the organization purchase enough roofing plastic and supplies to finish covering houses in the disaster site.
Operation Ukraine will make another delivery of supplies and 150 food boxes this month.
Items needed for the boxes include, bottles of Hunt”s ketchup, jars of Miracle Whip salad dressing, 4- and 5-pound bags of sugar, boxes of family-sized tea bags, boxes of crackers, cans of Spam, 1-pound boxes of spaghetti noodles and 1-pound boxes of egg noodles, cans or jars of spaghetti sauce, jars of peanut butter, jars of grape jelly, boxes of Kraft Deluxe Macaroni and Cheese, family-size cans of chicken noodle soup, cans of sliced peaches in natural juice or light syrup, boxes of instant chocolate pudding, cans of green beans, cans of whole-kernel corn, medium-size boxes of Bisquick mix, cans of Chicken of the Sea chicken, cans of cream of chicken soup and boxes of Little Debbie white cakes.
Donated items or donated cash must be received by the morning of May 10.
