Barrett Edens, a Mississippi State University graduate and former professional golfer is bringing his love of coffee and family cattle farming background home to West Point at Farmhouse Market and Coffee.
Edens has spent the last three years traveling the country as a professional golfer and felt like something was missing when he returned home. “I encountered a lot of really cool local shops that served top-notch products…when I came back and was living in West Point, I realized there were very few locally-owned spots to buy food from.”
Edens’ family has been in the cattle business since 1886. He has brought much of what he learned from his family farm to his own pastures where he raises beef for the market’s meat displays. Farmhouse features a premium meat case with some of the highest quality meats such as USDA Prime and Wagyu and a local case, featuring beef and pork from local farmers. Edens’ cattle are fed on a combination of grains and grass from the pasture.
Farmhouse’s coffee is all purchased from the Seeds Coffee Company in Birmingham. Seeds roasts the single-origin coffee and it is collected the next day.
While Edens has little business background beyond his family farm and a degree in business science, long-time friend and fellow MSU graduate Chris Fuse, who sports an economics degree, is co-managing Farmhouse with Edens.
Farmhouse Market and Coffee is located at 3229 Churchill Road and is open 6:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays.
Meanwhile, Columbus gained a new gun club in September with Double H Gun Club.
The club, situated on 86 acres of land, features 100 and 800 yard rifle ranges, six pistol bays and a five-stand shotgun range to be added at a later date.
The yearly membership fee is $250, but clients who sign up before December will have their memberships extended through December 2018.
Ranges are open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon-7 p.m. Sundays.
The club will host an open range day Nov. 4 with an entry fee of $10 which includes access to all ranges and raffle ticket for a Ruger rifle.
Finally, several changes are coming to Main Street Starkville.
Fig Studio and Shop, formerly Style Revel, will close shop at 201 E. Main St. today. Owner Letty Weeks is moving with her husband to the coast. While the store will not host a closing sale, much of their stock and some stage decorations will be featured in their $5 sale.
R. Tabb & Co Boutique and Gifts owned by Rebecca Tabb, will move from its current location at 210 E. Main St. to the new opening at 201. Tabb shared on social media that the business would move to the new location over the coming weekend.
Finally, George-Mary’s, a clothing and home goods store at 113B S. Lafayette St. will move to the vacant location at 210 E. Main St. on Oct. 12. The new 1,400 square foot store space is seven times larger than the Lafayette location according to owner Alesia Lucas.
A unique feature of George-Mary’s is an emphasis on home goods with a primitive flair. The store’s Urban Ancestor line features hand-made old-style pottery, wooden cutlery and other assorted kitchenware.
