Starkville Police Department officials say information in a Facebook post that began circulating Tuesday about an alleged murder is false and not a product of the department.
SPD Public Information Officer Brandon Lovelady told The Dispatch SPD received multiple requests for information about a shooting and arrest at Sandhill Arms apartments near the intersection of Louisville Street and Sand Road.
Lovelady said the questions stemmed from a Facebook post that alleged a woman shot her girlfriend.
The post, which SPD included with a press release, reads: “SPD was called to 135 Sand Rd. Apt. 35 in Sandhills (sic) Arms after neighbors heard several gunshots coming from the home. Kya Cook, 23, was arrested for the shooting death of her girlfriend and her girlfriends (sic) secret lover. Kya told police that she shot her girlfriend after she found a woman in her bed with her girlfriend after coming home from work. If you know any further information contact Starkville PD.”
Lovelady said the post’s claims are false. He said the department works, through social media and with local media outlets, to release credible information. The source of the post is unclear.
“It’s just something that’s been floating around that is untrue,” he said. “There is no supporting evidence. This is not a product of our organization, nor is it from a credible source. There is absolutely zero truth to it.”
Lovelady said it’s hard to say if someone could face any criminal charges for the post. However, he told The Dispatch no one had filed a report about the post as of Tuesday afternoon.
