Columbus police chased down and arrested a suspected armed kidnapper this morning after he fled in a stolen car with the owner of a Columbus gas station, police said.

Police identified the suspect as Demarquis Sentell Tate, 21, of 405 Apple St.

The incident started at about 7:30 a.m. at George''s BP at 1613 Waterworks Road. Regulars stopping in for coffee noticed the store was empty and the owner, George Young, could not be found, even though his cell phone and personal items were there.

Police say Tate kidnapped Young to take him to a bank to withdraw cash. No cash was taken from the store''s register, police said.

Meanwhile, police were notified about the missing store owner, and began a search for Young''s ''90s-model gold-colored Buick Lesabre.

Later in the morning, around 9 a.m., police spotted the car being driven by Young, near the store. Police suspect Tate, on the way to the bank, believed he needed a blank check to withdraw cash and was riding with Young back to the store to get one. The suspect was lying in the back seat.

The Buick was stuck in traffic, waiting for a train to pass. A police officer was a few cars behind Young and radioed other officers to the scene. When a police officer was approaching the car, Young got out, and Tate jumped in the driver''s seat and drove down the railroad tracks, north of North 14th Avenue near Moss Street, before becoming stuck.

The suspect jumped from the car and fled. He was arrested moments later in the parking lot of Phillips Construction, near Waterworks and North 14th Avenue.

The suspect was carrying a revolver with a 6-inch barrel, but never raised it or threatened officers with it, according to Officer Terrie Songer. Police didn''t fire weapons during the incident.

Let's see, armed robbery, armed kidnapping, and grand theft auto. I guess we know where he's going to be for a few years. Great job by the police for tracking him down and to the patrons that called the police when they saw something was wrong. At least this guy was smart enough to not pull out his pistol or this story would have a different ending.

It just seems like things are beginning to snowball in Columbus. That town used to be a safe and great place to live. Every time I look in the paper any more it is nothing but violent crimes. I commend the police for stopping this idiot before he hurt anybody but they need to nip this crime in the bud before it becomes a city like Memphis. The thugs and criminals are starting to take over our city and I think we need to take it back!!

Article Comment m commented at 5/12/2010 12:06:00 PM:

caught in the act- armed, should be a death penalty offense. violent criminals need to be eliminated from society, there is no rehabilitation .

Just how far did the "dummy" think he could drive a CAR up railroad-TRACKS???

Article Comment chill commented at 5/12/2010 12:52:00 PM:

GREAT JOB by the Police Dept.!!!!and concerned citizens!!!
Very glad he didn't hurt anyone.......just wish he would have at least "reached" for his weapon.....then we wouldn't have to spend a million dollars keeping his a** locked up.

Article Comment Lee commented at 5/12/2010 1:49:00 PM:

it all starts with parents. Parents need to take back control of their kids and keep a tighter reins on them. And dont give me the crap well i am a single mom bull. I was a single mom and boys are all good. They never robbed anyone and they finished school and are doing great in their lives. They are good men. I was a correctional officer in Sc and I took my kids thru the prison to show them what idiots look like. I think every teen needs a trip thru a correctional facility to see where they dont want to end up.

Article Comment Randy commented at 5/12/2010 3:00:00 PM:

The writer with the comment about rehabilitation was not right. I've worked in corrections for over 22 years and have seen and know of plenty of people who have come out a much smarter citizen. Incarceration does work for many.

The article states that Young got out of the car when it was approached by officers then it says Tate took the car down the tracks and got out, leaving Young in the car....I thought Young was already out of the car.

What this guy needs is the same judge that your Mayor and Councilman had so he can just have the charges dropped. Doesn't that seem like a fair thing to do? What's fair for the goose, right?

well i think the police and citizens could and would take the city back if there were not being complained on all the time what officer wants to do his or her job if they r always getting complained on how can they who wants to they dont make anything here and then the little they make is threatened everytime some dumb a** goes to complain its like they dont have any power anymore the criminals have more rights than the victims do for instance macon if he would have came back he prolly would have got a no bill what about the city worker that burg the dump i saw him at market st just walking around like nothing was wrong if it was was like it was in the early 90s things wouldn't be like this we wouldn't be afraid to come out at night. i know alot of cops and hear this stuff all the time maybe we as citizens need to support our police more and stop complaining on them so much. CPD i support u and the ppl who dont r the ones who dont should not have the right to call u when they need u i have lived here for 7 years and have only called maybe 3 times Go cpd kick a**

Article Comment Bill commented at 5/13/2010 6:40:00 AM:

Only one question remains: how many James Bond movies did Tate watch before this stupid attempt at escaping? Somebody in the clink needs to tell him MacGyver isn't real, either.

Has anyone noticed that our police cheif thinks he is a ladies man? What a complete weirdo!

Yeah, now this was a bro'tha with a plan. Sadly it was a stupid plan. Seems to have been a stupid bro'tha too. Hmmm, am I seeing a pattern here?

Article Comment tom commented at 5/13/2010 9:49:00 AM:

To Crystal: Finally someone with some sense in this town!!! You hit the nail on the head honey! The police can't do their jobs because everyone that they write a ticket to or arrest complians like a dumb a@@! Then the city who hired the officers won't back them, instead they back the criminal. The mayor and city council need to get their priorities straight!!
To Justin Smith: Who let you out of your cage!!! For those of you who don't know Joe he is a very nice person and he actually has his officers backs!!!
To Wondering: So what if he thinks he is a ladies man! At least he is not married, which is more than I can say for a lot of men around here! And maybe he thinks you are weird.

Article Comment wondering commented at 5/13/2010 10:14:00 AM:

If the police cheif would be more serious about doing his job instead of wetting his whistle and his other whistle. Maybe other officers won't follow his lead. He would maybe have more time to solve more of the cities crime. It is almost sickening how he gropes women in public. So tom you can sit down and STFU!

Article Comment bully 11 commented at 5/13/2010 11:48:00 AM:

The chief was married when he moved here and now all he does is chase young skirt. It started well before any divorce.

Article Comment wondering commented at 5/13/2010 12:28:00 PM:

It would be ok if he was nonchalant about it. But he is half lit, red faced everytime I se him.

Article Comment tom commented at 5/13/2010 1:45:00 PM:

Wondering: I just wonder, when you are being groped would you happen to be wearing a skirt that is so short that your ass cheeks are hanging out? Oh, I know "it doesn't matter what you wear", but it most certainly does. When you are out there advertising and leaving nothing to the imagination just what the hell do you think is going to happen! If you don't want to be treated like trash, don't act like trash. So you sit down and STFU!!!!!!!

Article Comment wondering commented at 5/13/2010 2:10:00 PM:

Tom my fine worded fellow... I sir, am a gentleman. Taking the quality of offense you took to my statement about the police cheif you must be an officer. And you might have a bruise on the back of your head, get out from under the desk. A "CHIEF" isn't suppose to be groping these "ladies of the night" you refer to. It is due to lack of class of many of our police officers and "chief" that has given this city a black eye within the state. As a police chief he should show some type of restraint when in the eye of the public. I am a 26 year old male and show better traits of a police chief than he does. So excuse you...

Article Comment tom commented at 5/13/2010 3:18:00 PM:

Wondering: Don't let the name fool you, I am a WOMAN!!!! And no I am not a police officer. If you think you could be a better cheif, apply for the job. Or do you have a bad record.

Article Comment wondering commented at 5/13/2010 3:45:00 PM:

No record on the quality fellow. I think I just might. Wanna be my assistant chief?

Article Comment Justin Smith commented at 5/13/2010 5:18:00 PM:

Tom,
Joe knows who Justin is...and no, "No Show Joe" has NO ONE'S back but his own. He's an open joke among the rank and file in this area.

I grew up in Columbus, 1 block from the county jail.So i know a lot about how people in Columbus think.
As i read the comments; Columbus still has the same old problem...Division.... You should not want to give a human the death sentence and the store-owner`s life was not taken.

Say AMEN if you are a good-christian.

Most people can benefit from rehabilitation. Yes, the criminal act was small-minded. Yet, American CORPORATIONS rob and steal in the Billions and the white-collar criminals get 5,7,or 10 years..also some people think it is funny.

Article Comment tom commented at 5/14/2010 8:03:00 AM:

I was born an raised in Columbus and this is not the same place. The crime is terrible. I live in Texas and Dallas is on of the roughest cities and now Columbus is making Dallas look like the safest place on earth. I want to commend the officers who are doing their jobs. My husband is an officer in Dallas and his job is not easy. So stop complaining about what the officers are not doing and praise them for what they are doing. Maybe the slackers on the force will take note and do better.

Article Comment wondering commented at 5/15/2010 1:02:00 PM:

Crystal, Tom, you to are rediculous. Crystal, blogging is writing your opinions onto a website. You two are retarded. I have never complained about the cops in this town. I have paid my tickets when I got them. You two maybe have never gotten out of your home and seen the things I have. I see these cops on a daily basis. I know a bunch of them. My complaint wasn't against the cops. If your country bumpkins could read it was directed to the CHEIF of police. I am sorry your minds are to illiterate to understand where i am coming from maybe you didn't have proper home training! So go back to your trailers, fry some chicken, smoke a cigarette, with a baby on your hip.

Article Comment wondering commented at 5/15/2010 1:06:00 PM:

Tom, by the way I keep a .45 on my side all the time I won't be having this problem of being kidnapped! I would have handled this situation alittle differently.
