Mississippi joins health overhaul lawsuit

The Associated Press

JACKSON -- Gov. Haley Barbour says Mississippi has joined a multistate lawsuit challenging the federal health care overhaul.

Barbour has been saying for weeks that he intended to join the suit. On Friday, he joined it.

Barbour, a Republican, calls the federal law an "unprecedented expansion of federal power." He says the Constitution does not give Congress the power to require people to buy health insurance.

Mississippi is one of 20 states involved in the lawsuit, which is led by Florida.

Way to go Governor!

Thank you!

That's fine. However, after all of this I expect Gov Barbour and the rest of the republicans to get together and present a plan to replace this health care bill. Something that will help Mississippians and Americans who have worked hard all of their lives but cannot get or afford healthcare because of prior illness. Something to keep the rest of us from paying for the millions who use the emergency room because they cannot afford healthcare. Something to help businesses who are paying ridiculous premiums to insurance companies and losing profits because of it. Something that will help Americans afford preventative care instead of waiting until an illness becomes worse and the treatment much more expensive. Will this happen? Probably not. This problem will continue and become more expensive to the taxpayers without some sort of change. If you don't agree with the answer, at least give some sort of alternative.

NONE OF YOU ... If you had cast your vote then we would see it your way Correct????? Just like the Arizona Laws Think about it folks had we demanded proof of citizenship before 911 we would still have our twin towers in the skyline...so many loved ones would still be with us...So if you want to make a difference then stand up and protect this GREAT NATION from those who want to take our freedom/livelyhood/and rob us of our dreams culture.

To all the people see how far this Republican led government has led the state of mississppi! So far Last in everything

Article Comment Steve commented at 5/14/2010 11:32:00 PM:

You idiots that say Barbour is a lemming know nothing about politics. That man has been setting the pace since the early 90's and was directly responsible for the Republican party retaking congress in 1994.
Those that don't think he's helping teacher--I only have one thing to say to YOU...THERE'S NO FREAKIN MONEY!! Everybody thinks cuts should come from somewhere else...And does anybody remember during Katrina was destroying the gulf coast in LA and MS? Does anyone remember us having any of the problems that LA had? Leadership folks....that makes the difference, and like him or not, he IS a leader...

Article Comment Dave commented at 5/15/2010 4:44:00 AM:

How has Mr. Barbour led this state last in everything ?? He has helped do more for Mississippi than any Gov. i remember.. His Leadership, and hard work helped bring in Big Corporate (JOBS) that Ms. would not have had a chance at. If people are willing to work, they are Jobs to be had. And even if we are last, whats wrong with that. Mississippi, love it, or leave it. 2012 Barbour 4 President !

Article Comment jan commented at 5/15/2010 5:55:00 AM:

Mr. Barbour is just using tax money for nothing and he knows it. All he's doing is trying to fool you. IT IS NOTHING HE OR ANY OTHER STATE CAN DO. All politics.

Article Comment Barbara commented at 5/15/2010 6:41:00 AM:

Gov.Barbour is the best Gov.Ms. has ever had that I can remember...We have been on the bottom of the totum pole on evrything...but for once on some things we are gettin on top or at least in the middle and that is because of the Gov.I am hoping and he should run for Senator in Nov.2010...we need him in the senate first and then go all the way for the president...Go Mississippi...we are a great state and we do have a few problems but us mississippians knows how good a state we are...if you don't agree you are not a true born mississippians I am and proud of it.

Article Comment Steve commented at 5/15/2010 8:22:00 AM:

jan your comment was 'Mr Barbour is just using your money for nothing"...HUH? I'm sorry but this comments says it all about your political astuteness...the legislature directs where you money goes. Right now, if Barbour hadnt gotten involved with budget cutting, this state would be worse off than California...further, had Ronnie Musgrove or the current legislature had gotten their way, the 'rainy day fund' would have been empty before Haley ever took office.
Dave I too support Haley for president..I just dont know if he can shake off what others consider 'political baggage' to do it. I guarantee you this...he would be the best president we have had since Reagan...Most people have no idea that he was the power behind the throne even then. Instead, people are ignorant and short-sided enough to vote in somebody like Obama who knows nothing except what he has learned from social readings and socialist friends so can't possibly run a capitalist society...

Article Comment TD commented at 5/15/2010 9:27:00 AM:

I agree with you Steve that Haley would be the best president since Reagan. Unfortunately that won't happen - and we all know it.

Just imagine the fodder for the liberal media -- a white conservative from Mississippi with strong lobbyist ties running against their annointed candidate who does no wrong.

Gov Jindal (LA) or Gov Pawlentey (MN) have a good chance at upsetting the power tables in DC. And don't count out Gov Christie (NJ) either. He's an up and comer that has cut taxes.

Haley would be a great Treasury Secretary.

Article Comment jo commented at 5/15/2010 12:14:00 PM:

Does the Constitution give the Federal Government the authority to give our state $1.73 for every $1.00 that we pay in. A politician says everybody can get medical care if they get hurt or sick, that we don't need health care. But if they don't have insurance, the ones who have insurance will have to pay they're bill. Barbour is a lobbyist and a business man, so he is going to side with business, not the people. Business won't be able to work people without having somekind of insurance for them, as of now, some of it is being paid for by the state's taxpayers. Lobbyists are doing more harm to America than our enemies.

Article Comment observing commented at 5/15/2010 12:53:00 PM:

The health insurance plan is simmilar to the one that Mitt Romney, weighing another run for the GOP presidential nomination, signed such a requirement into law at the state level as Massachusetts governor in '06. At the time, Romney defended it "as a personal responsibility principle," and Massachusetts newest senator, Scott Brown, backed it. Romney now says Obama's plan is a federal takeover and should be repealed. Republicans will try anything to get control of the WH even at the expense of some people having to do without insurance.

I find it amazing that I have not heard one word from Barbour about the oil spill. But when the oil covers the beaches and the waters turn into the "dead sea," you can bet he will be asking the federal government for help before he will BP. That will certainly test his pride.

Article Comment change commented at 5/15/2010 3:52:00 PM:

If its socialism that you don't wan't "garie", Steve, Jan, and every one else who is wanting to run those who want reform out of the state - then here's the deal: Cancel your schools, close down the hospitals, shut down funding for the highways, and return all that socialist money that was funneled to the coast.

You can't have it both ways on this issue. The United States has more "socialist" policies than you would like to believe. "The common defense"!? Didn't Beck tell you "common" is code word!

Article Comment concerned commented at 5/15/2010 4:51:00 PM:

This health care bill is the most sweeping piece of legislation since Medicare was passed in 1965. It aims to smooth out one of the roughest edges in American society, the inability of many people to afford medical care after they lose a job or get sick. And it would do so in large measure by taxing the rich. That's why the Republicans don't like it. They're for the rich, not the people.

I guess Haley would have sued to not require Social Security and Medicare premiums not be mandatory as well?

I dare say 99% of these people complaining about healthcare insurance reform would refuse Social Security or Medicare. For that matter, in 2014 if they have a pre-existing illness, I would bet they would be first in line to benefit from the reform.

@Honest Woman & Special Ops Vet -- it is obvious from both of your usage of English that President Obama is to be pityed if all of his supporters are like you two. Honest woman, if you have a six figure salary, you must be one of those civil service bureaucrats that are constantly screwing up everything the government and your president is trying to accomplish. It's no surprise that libs don't hear positive info about our Governor, the left stream media they feed on wouldn't dare say something in context about any conservative leader. Libs are like mushrooms , kept in the dark and fed a lot of blimp.
The dispatch is so far left anymore it's starting to turn most of it's readers off. It's gone too far when all you can read about on Sun morn is what the Imes are up to lately and what the other Obama worshiping liberal blogers from the dispatch web site have to say through very distastful and hateful comments about our conservative leaders. It's just turning people off. Canceling my paper for sure!!

and hot nod rova I don't CARE about his lobbying past. I want some one who will actually LEAD this country. I don't see anybody else out there that will do that.
And for the lady that asked what Haley had done about the gulf spill...he HAS talked about it and tried to encourage tourism in the area despite future possibilities...what do you want him to do...get a skimmer?

Article Comment answerme commented at 5/16/2010 3:58:00 PM:

sickoflibs, maybe the reason I haven't heard any positive news about our Governor of late is because there hasn't been any. You sound like a disgruntle conservative who can dish it out, but can't take it. Maybe you should join the party that's trying to do something, instead of being in the party that's against every thing.
Barbour took $600 million of the Katrina money that was mean't to replace houses that was blown away by Katrina and gave it to his business associates. How would you feel if one of those houses was your's. I'm sure you would be sickofbarbour.

FYI I am not a member of the Rep party, I'm an independent. So much unlike the libs who blindly follow the progressive movement commies who call themselves democrats. I'm not too blind to see that they're "trying to do something" , as you said, and I can see it's the wrong "something" for our Republic. You're right that it makes all true Americans pretty blimp angry and the elections are showing how true I am.

The Republicans had the keys to the car for eight years, and what did they do? They drove it into the ditch with engine trouble and bald tires. Obama and the Democrats have dug it out of the ditch and have it back on the road. Now the Republicans want the keys back...NOPE! Republicans are not going to get to drive the car again intil they know how to take care of it. The Republicans have done absolutely nothing but obstruct and wish for Obama to fail. If Obama fails, the country fails. They could care less; it's all about the power and money that was taken away from their greedy little hands. When dopes (hate mongers) such as Limbaugh, Palin, Ginrich, and Beck are embraced by the right wing Republicans is there any hope for our country if the Republicans are put back in power again...NOPE!
