Approximately 40,000 spectators made their way to Columbus Air Force Base this past weekend for the Wings Over Columbus airshow.
Rick “Sonic” Johnson, chief of public affairs for the 14th Flying Training Wing at CAFB, reported preliminary attendance of 25,000-30,000 for Saturday”s show and approximately 10,000 Sunday.
“While attendance numbers were not as high as some of our previous air shows, it is understandable with the weather forecasts for the weekend,” said Johnson. “We got extremely lucky with a near-picture perfect day for Saturday”s air show. Sunday, with bad weather surrounding the area, all but one aviation act flew, including the USAF Thunderbirds.
“We hope all those who attended were rewarded by the demonstrated skills of our performers.”
Eight aerial acts performed over the weekend, along with 24 static aircraft displays on the ground. The Thunderbirds were joined in the air by the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and Tora, Tora, Tora, a civilian act which recreated the bombing of Pearl Harbor with vintage aircraft and pyrotechnics.
