A Columbus man is behind bars on three felony charges after a Lowndes County Joint Drug Task Force agent arrested him on Friday.
Vershawn Orlando Williams, 18, is accused of aggravated assault, armed robbery and shooting into a vehicle, according to a Columbus Police Department press release.
Two of the charges -- armed robbery and shooting into a vehicle -- stem from incidents in 2017, the release said.
The aggravated assault charge comes from an April 28 incident when Williams allegedly shot someone at about noon in the area of 15th Street and Eighth Avenue North. Police located the victim in the area when responding to a shots-fired call. The victim was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle for non life-threatening, and was treated and released the same day.
Police say Williams and the victim knew each other and had been in an altercation prior to the shooting. CPD officials had identified Williams as a person-of-interest earlier this month but indicated the victim was not cooperating with the investigation.
Additionally, the release said Williams is being questioned concerning "other incident in Columbus involving gunfire," and he could face more charges.
Williams is being held in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. His bond has not been set.
