An early-morning fire Wednesday at a West Point apartment building claimed the lives of two people.
Clay County Coroner Alvin Carter did not return a call seeking the identities of the victims by press time Thursday.
West Point Fire Chief Ken Wilbourne said his department, along with assisting units from Clay County, responded to the fire shortly after midnight at 23 Layne Drive. The fire was contained to a single four-unit building, he said.
"Right now, it's looking like it's going to be accidental, probably involving extension cords," Wilbourne said.
Wilbourne said the building received extensive damage.
"It looks like a total loss," he said.
