Two Starkville restaurants won top prizes and several other Golden Triangle businesses were listed among the state”s best in Mississippi Magazine”s recently released Best of Mississippi rankings.
Restaurant Tyler won the Best Brunch category, while Mugshots Grill and Bar, which has branches in Starkville, Hattiesburg, Biloxi and Flowood, tied Five Guys Burgers and Fries in Ridgeland for the Best Hamburger award. The awards were the result of a reader survey.
This was the fourth year in a row Mugshots has won or shared the Best Hamburger award, according to Mississippi Magazine archives.
“It”s really great to know people appreciate our hamburger that much,” said Sam Montgomery, general manager of Mugshots” Starkville branch. “We”re striving to keep it up and give people what they want.”
At Restaurant Tyler, where brunch consists of anything from biscuits, eggs and sausage to a Belgian waffle with caramel, whipped cream and Vermont maple syrup, chef Ty Thames said he is honored to receive the Best Brunch designation. The extensive brunch menu has grown increasingly popular over the past year or two.
“I”m just real excited about people digging what I”m doing,” Thames said.
Thames also was impressed by the fact that nearly a half dozen other Starkville restaurants were named among the best in the state in their respective categories.
“That”s a lot of restaurants for the little town of Starkville,” Thames said.
For Best Barbeque, The Hickory Pit in Jackson took home the top honor, while The Little Dooey in Starkville was listed among the best in the state.
McAllister”s Deli, which has branches in Starkville and Columbus, won the Best Ice Tea award.
In the Fine Dining category, Nick”s in Jackson was voted the top restaurant, while Restaurant Tyler was listed among the best.
In the Best Sushi category, Starkville”s Umi Japanese Steakhouse and Bar was listed among the best, while Nagoya in Madison and Jackson tied for the top prize with Little Tokyo and Sakura Bana in Ridgeland.
For Italian food, Amerigo in Ridgeland was voted the top restaurant, while Stromboli”s in Starkville was listed among the best.
In the Best Deli category, which was won by Newk”s Cafe, a statewide chain, Bulldog Deli in Starkville also made the list.
In Columbus, J. Broussard”s was listed in the Best Steak category, which was won by Shapley”s Restaurant in Ridgeland.
The Best of Mississippi edition also ranked a number of other categories in which Golden Triangle establishments were listed.
For Best Golf Course, Old Waverly in West Point was listed, while Dancing Rabbit Golf Course in Pearl won the top prize.
Reed”s, with stores in Starkville, Columbus and Tupelo, was included among businesses listed in the Best Source For The Well-Dressed Woman category. CoatTails in Jackson won first place.
The Attic in Columbus was listed among the Best Vintage and Designer Clothing Consignment Shops, while The Orange Peel in Jackson brought home the top award.
