A Columbus man is accused of attempted murder for allegedly hitting someone with a vehicle intentionally after an argument.
Danny J. Lewis, 54, was arrested Saturday according to Lowndes County Adult Detention Center records.
The incident occurred at about 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at the intersection of Fourth Street and 15th Avenue South according to a press release Columbus Police Department issued on Thursday afternoon.
Lewis and the victim had been in a fist fight, after which witnesses reported Lewis got into a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor and intentionally struck the victim with the moving vehicle, the press release said. The vehicle reportedly dragged the victim several feet after impact.
The victim is in critical condition and was transferred to a Jackson hospital earlier this week for more specialized care, according to police.
CPD officers identified Lewis as the suspect several hours later, the release said.
“A vehicle that is intentionally used as a means to hurt someone is considered a weapon,” Police Chief Fred Shelton said in a prepared statement. “The evidence and witnesses lead us to believe that Lewis intentionally caused harm and that’s why we have the charge as attempted murder.”
Lewis is being held without bond.
