JACKSON — A second case of a debilitating deer disease has been found in Mississippi.
The state Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks announced Friday that a white-tailed deer found Oct. 8 in Pontotoc County has tested positive for chronic wasting disease.
The contagious and fatal neurological disease typically causes deer to have tremors and other movement problems and lose weight. The disease is already present among deer in Arkansas and 23 other states.
The department says it’s awaiting results from an additional test before taking action.
An earlier case was found in January in Issaquena County.
That prompted restrictions on feeding wildlife and hog trapping in surrounding counties seeking to control the disease’s spread.
Mississippi last year banned import of dead deer carcasses in hopes of keeping out the disease.
