Columbus police are seeking a masked man who tried to rape an 85-year-old woman in the Northhaven Woods neighborhood off Highway 45 North, this morning.
The victim was gardening in her backyard at about 8:45 a.m. when she was approached by the suspect, who forced her inside her house while holding a handgun, said Columbus Police Department Public Information Officer Terrie Songer.
Once inside, the suspect went into another room, allowing the woman to escape out the front door and to a neighbor''s house, where she called police, Songer said.
The suspect was described by police as a slim, black man with a dark complexion, in his 30s, standing 5-foot-10 and wearing a white bandana across his face.
He was not in custody at 1 p.m. Thursday, Songer said.
Anyone with information about the case should call Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at 1-800-530-7151.

please be careful people are sick these days. Its a shame you cannot even work around your own home and feel safe. Its more sicking thie poor old lady had to encounter this with sicko. I pray she will be ok and police stay with this until you"ll catch someone for a change.

what's a shame is that she didn't have a gun to drop this low life in his tracks. People like this don't deserve any place in a free society

Some people just don't have enough to do. This black man needed to have been working on a job somewhere instead of roaming the street at time of morning. Our seniors are targets for this type of low life sicko. With the protection we are having to deal with in our city...this low life will never be found and arrested. Oh wait, maybe if he flags down a policeman, jumps in his air conditoned car and confess to it ..he might actually get arrested but I sure hope it does not require the office to leave that patrol car to make this happen. I promise you they are not actively looking for this person.

Hell is not hot enough for someone who'd do such a thing to an elderly lady. Someone knows who did this. Maybe they will come forward and do the right thing and put this criminal away. And may he STAY put away, not released to repeat such a horrible act.

My guess is that a rapist who can't successfully rape an 85-year-old woman is going to learn to like the taste of pillow if he goes to prison.

It is very sad what happened. There is too much crime around this town. Something needs to be done. It may take citizens taking the law into their own hands.
edderds commented at 8/21/2010 12:02:00 AM:
If this happened to my 85 year old mother, my brothers, sisters and me WOULD find this guy and he would never have another chance to rape anyone else! Hunting season would be open.
citizen commented at 8/21/2010 12:19:00 AM:
giggles. I sincerely hope you do not need the police any time soon.
They have a really tough job to do, are under paid and under appreciated. I'm sure they are doing all they can to catch this nasty criminal.

That may be the stupidest thing I've ever read here, and that's saying something.
doj commented at 8/21/2010 12:40:00 PM:
Catching and jailing this guy is not going to help. Hanging him from a tree and leaving him there for a couple of days as an example will.
ryannelson commented at 8/21/2010 12:52:00 PM:
@Sharp Nasal Kent. I actually know for a fact that this isn't the stupidest thing you've ever heard. Besides, let's be honest- the CPD isn't exactly the FBI. If they weren't dedicating enough resources to this case, no one would be surprised.
kj commented at 8/21/2010 12:56:00 PM:
Yea, that's what the south needs, modern day lynchings. /sarcasm
doj commented at 8/21/2010 1:32:00 PM:
kj, Enough of your sarcasm. I didn't say lynch him. Give him a speedy trial and make an example of him. Languishing in jail, awaiting appeal after appeal for years, hasn't solved the crime problem.
kj commented at 8/22/2010 4:22:00 PM:
"hanging him from a tree and leaving him there for a couple of days as an example" isn't supposed to make people think of lynchings?
OK. Yeah. Right. How stupid of me to think that from what you wrote.
doj commented at 8/22/2010 4:28:00 PM:
kj, it's all in the definition.
edderds commented at 8/23/2010 2:33:00 AM:
Personally, I think castration should occur before the lynching AND hanging in this case!
How many of you have mothers or grandmothers at that age? Would you take it lightly if someone tried to rape one of them?
roscoe p. coltrain commented at 8/23/2010 8:01:00 AM:
Man, did I ever get the wrong idea from that post. I thought edderds was wanting the nads for himself.
I really gotta start reading the post better.
