JACKSON — A Mississippi school district has ended its policy of using race in class elections after a mother pulled her mixed-race children from the school.
The 30-year-old policy was designed to achieve racial equality by allowing only white kids to to run for some class offices one year, and black kids the next.
Brandy Springer said her 12-year-old daughter, who is half native American, couldn”t run for sixth-grade class reporter at Nettleton Middle School in Lee County because that position was only for black students this year.
The school changed the policy Friday after the story spread across the Internet.
Springer, who is white, had two children who are half native American at the school. She said she has two younger children who are half black.
