DECATUR, Ala. - A pistol-packing grandmother in Decatur hopes intruders will think twice before messing with her again.
Police say 69-year-old Ethel Jones shot 18-year-old Michael O''Neal Bynum in the abdomen when she said she found him inside her bedroom. Bynum lived less than 200 yards from Jones, but she said she didn''t know him.
"I hope this will make people have second thoughts before they break into a home in our neighborhood and stop some of the crime we''ve had around here," she told The Decatur Daily.
Jones said she sleeps with her gun under a pillow next to her. She said she was going to the bathroom shortly before 3 a.m. Monday when she thought she heard someone at her back door and then her front door. She grabbed her gun as a precaution and came out of the bathroom to find someone in her bedroom with a pen light.
"I shot three times, and he ran away bleeding," she said.
Then she called 911.
Police said Bynum returned to his residence and went by private vehicle to Decatur General Hospital. Then he was transferred to Huntsville Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
Police says Bynum, who was on probation for a burglary conviction, faces a charge of second-degree burglary. Officers said it appears he got into the home by removing a window air conditioner from a back window.
Jones, who''s retired after 27 years as an auditor with Copeland Corp., said she''s had a gun for years.
"I''m glad I had it," she said. "I don''t know what he would have done when he didn''t find what he was looking for. He might have killed me. You can''t ever tell what people might do these days."

She should have aimed a little higher and saved the taxpayers money for keeping this jerk in jail. This is what should happen to anyone that breaks into a home.Way to go MS. Jones.

I agree with deputy, my retired cop dad always said to shoot to kill cause the person breaking in could sue you for shooting him! And they could win! So get some target practice in home defenders!

I disagree with deputysargent: I think she should have shot a little lower! If she had shot his balls off then where would he be in prison! Just another little "bitch" for all the other prisoners!

That would keep him from breeding more of his kind too.

In MS the castle doctrine would protect her from lawsuits. Don't know about AL though. I bet he thought she would be an easy target. Good for her that she proved him wrong!

Ahh, but Obama, the Clintons, Childers, Nancy, Harry, and all the nauseous ilk of liberals (all Dems.) would have had the fine young man, rape, and kill granny, then steal what he could, rather than give her the right to bear arms an defend herself.

Go Granny Go!!! Yep too bad she didn't aim a little higher and take out that piece of trash.

From one granny to another, I say you go girl!!!
I have a 12 guage pump next to my bed. If I wake up I intend on doing just what she did. I believe this is exactly why we should keep our right to bear arms.
The government will have to come in and take mine! Cause I ain't giving them up

Good on granny, BUT ...
1. If the punk, after being shot in the abdomen, made it back to his house and was able to start a car and drive himself to a hospital, she needs a weapon with a bit more oomph. He could have done her serious damage instead of just getting away.
2. If all he was armed with was a penlight, she'd better shut up and lawyer up.

Papa, there will be no charges on Granny. You are not required to submit or retreat when confronted by a stranger in your home. It was a legal shoot.
