A toddler was killed Friday afternoon after he fell from a moving vehicle in Oktibbeha County.
At about 12:14 p.m., the Oktibbeha County Sheriff”s Department responded to a report that a child had fallen out of a moving vehicle in the University Hills Mobile Home Park and may have been run over, according to an OCSD press release.
Deputies responded to the scene, located off Highway 182 East, along with volunteer firefighters who assisted deputies in rendering aid to 2-year-old Treveon Raymar Bluitt until OCH Regional Medical Center paramedics arrived. Paramedics then transported Bluitt by ambulance to the emergency room at OCH Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
According to the Sheriff”s Department, Bluitt was buckled in his car seat and was riding with his mother, Katrina Teressa Bluitt, 25, when the child unbuckled the car seat and opened the door of the vehicle as it was traveling through the trailer park. It is unclear how fast the vehicle was traveling when the child fell.
The Oktibbeha County Sheriff”s Office advises parents to pay close attention to their children while riding in vehicles. Parents are urged to place additional mirrors in the vehicle to be able to closely monitor children”s activities.
Also, efforts should be made to activate the child safety locks that are placed on all newer model cars. These locks do not allow the doors to be opened from the interior of vehicles and can be found on the rear passenger doors.
