Almost 1,000 Caledonia Elementary School students were evacuated Friday after construction crews broke a gas line while working on an expansion to the school.
Students were moved to the high school gymnasium at about 8:45 a.m., shortly after the leak was reported to 911, said Lowndes County Emergency Management Director Cindy Lawrence.
No one was injured by the leaked gas, which was cut off within 15 minutes by Caledonia Natural Gas Co., Lawrence said.
Students were back in the school at about 9:10 a.m., she said.
Conn Construction workers, who are building four new classrooms at the southern end of the school, were apparently in the process of cleaning out a ditch when they struck the pipe.
Lowndes County Sheriff”s deputies and Emergency Management official responded to the leak.
