A Columbus man died after the vehicle he was driving collided with an ambulance at approximately 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Lowndes County coroner Greg Merchant has confirmed.
According to Merchant, John Ford, 59, died after losing control of his vehicle and crashing into a Noxubee County ambulance on Fifth Street North. The ambulance was carrying a patient to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. No one in the ambulance was injured, Merchant said.
Ford was conscious at the scene and said he had blacked out.
“We’re continuing to investigate, but based on what was reported at the scene, the driver had some sort of medical emergency causing him to lose control of his vehicle,” Merchant said.
Ford was taken to nearby Baptist Memorial Hospital, but died from the injuries sustained in the accident a short time later.
