A 16-year-old Caledonia High School student died late Saturday in Lowndes County after the car she and two friends were in swerved to miss a deer.
Kasandra Fowler, of 262 Winter Cove in Caledonia, was in the front passenger seat when the southbound vehicle left Wolf Road in the 6500 block near Spruill Road at about 9:30 p.m., said Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant.
The 10th-grade student was pronounced dead at the scene from "massive head injuries" about an hour later, he said.
The 16-year-old driver, Tabitha Cantrell, of 56 Anderson Grove Road in Caledonia, told sheriff''s deputies she was driving at 45 mph when a deer jumped in front of her maroon 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, said Chief Deputy Greg Wright.
She swerved and lost control of the vehicle, which went off the right-hand shoulder and hit an embankment, he continued. The car flipped multiple times before landing right-side up.
Cantrell and her back-seat passenger, 16-year-old Alison Adair, of 502 Martin Road in Caledonia, were released from Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle after they were treated for "moderate injuries," Wright said.
Both 11th grade students were back in school today.
The funeral service for Fowler is Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Woodland Baptist Church on Ridge Road. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m., although the location had not been determined this morning.

This is such a sad thing to happen to such a young outgoing wonderful friend who I will always remember that she is up there watching over everybody now. I mean anybody who has never been to (CHS) Caledonia High School before if they walked in today, they would have noticed something was wrong. News spread quickly about what happened that sad Saturday night, and there were so many rumors and speculations about what happened. It was so quite today at CHS I have never seen it this quiet; there are so many kids and adults who care so much for Kasandra, Alison, and Tabitha. I am very grateful for the amazing fact that Alison and Tabitha were able to go to school today, after what had just happened. And as for Kasandra we will never forget her not only in our hearts but in our minds. She had a special place and meaning to everybody. We had a (FCA) Fellowship of Christian Athletes prayer meeting today during break and it was amazing to see all the people who attended. There was people outside the door trying to join in while the room was already crammed full, and I know everybody in there cared greatly about these 3 because the attendance and the fact that there wasn't a single person who was very sad or crying. The sobs were just another reminder that you can't take life for granted. One thing I hope everyone understands is only the 3 really know what happened Saturday and that it is nobody's fault and can't put anybody at blame. I really hope this gets printed in the paper because people need to see that others care besides just them and that we are there for the families and friends. Anybody who knows any of the 3 especially Kasandra; would only have good things to say about them. Please keep Kasandra Fowler, Alison Adair, and Tabitha Cantrell along with their families in your thoughts and prayers, they really need them right about now.

It's not supposed to happen. Children aren't supposed to die. When it happens the pain is undiscribable. So many hearts are wounded. There is nothing to help the pain. There is nothing that anyone can say to make it better. We can only be there to offer support to those closest. Kasandra will be mourned & missed by many.
Our prayers are with her parents & family, Tabitha & Alison, her boyfriend Robert Barker, & all those close to her.

my heart bleeds for the pain the family and friends are experiencing this very moment. i too have a HS student who was friends with all 3 involved. i can't imagine the pain of loosing a child so beautifula and you with a full life ahead of her. may God bless her family and the hands of God hold them close to Him. my prayers are also with Tabith and Allison as i know they are soo deep in pain for their loss.

Just not understanding how someone "dislikes" these comments. I understand the "likes" but the "dislikes" confuse me. Someone is expressing the sorrow they feel on the loss of a life, and someone "doesn't like" it??

roscoe i agree with you, it just totally blows me away what some people will say and do when others are mourning their loved ones and friends. What has our world come too? where is the love and compassion for our neighbors?

we are from caledonia and my high schooler is friends with the girls and our hearts break at what the friends and family and girls are going through, death is hard enough for adults to accept and deal with, so it is really difficult for kids to understand. Our community is behind the family and friends of the girls, along with all our prayers ! Family and friends of girls please ignore anything anyone "dislikes" or posts if negative, there are some people who are just plain evil and enjoy creating more pain for those involved !

those who hit "dislike" needs to be a little BOLDER and post their reason for NOT liking a post in memorium????? hiding is evil and childish

And thinking you can block someone from posting with a phoney subscription doesn't work either Peter.
