A 16-year-old Caledonia High School student died late Saturday in Lowndes County after the car she and two friends were in swerved to miss a deer.
Kasandra Fowler, of 262 Winter Cove in Caledonia, was in the front passenger seat when the southbound vehicle left Wolf Road in the 6500 block near Spruill Road at about 9:30 p.m., said Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant.
The 10th-grade student was pronounced dead at the scene from “massive head injuries” about an hour later, he said.
The 16-year-old driver, Tabitha Cantrell, of 56 Anderson Grove Road in Caledonia, told sheriff”s deputies she was driving at 45 mph when a deer jumped in front of her maroon 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, said Chief Deputy Greg Wright.
She swerved and lost control of the vehicle, which went off the right-hand shoulder and hit an embankment, he continued. The car flipped multiple times before landing right-side up.
Cantrell and her back-seat passenger, 16-year-old Alison Adair, of 502 Martin Road in Caledonia, were released from Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle after they were treated for “moderate injuries,” Wright said.
Both 11th grade students were back in school today.
The funeral service for Fowler is Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Woodland Baptist Church on Ridge Road. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m., although the location had not been determined this morning.
