Columbus police are on the lookout today for a 43-year-old man who kicked in the doors to a woman”s house and bedroom and chased her with a sword.
O”Dell Stevenson Carter Jr., of 114 Gaylane Drive, broke into a residence in the 800 block of Alabama Street through the back door at about 3 a.m., said police Public Information Officer Terrie Songer.
Carter, whose relationship to the victim was not clear, then kicked through the bedroom door, grabbed a sword off of a gun rack and chased the victim from the house, Songer said.
As the victim was running out of the house, Carter grabbed a backpack she had picked up and pulled her to the floor, Songer said. The victim was able to escape and call 911 from a neighbor”s house.
The victim, who was not identified by police, identified her assailant as Carter, who has a long history of run-ins with police, Songer said.
The call was initially reported as a burglary, she said.
Stolen truck recovered
Also over the weekend, the 46-year-old owner of a stolen 2011 Ford F-250 used a GPS tracking device to find his truck and the two men who are accused of taking it.
The truck was reported stolen Friday from 701 Sixth St. S. at about 10 a.m., Songer said.
Later that day, the owner used his GPS device to find his truck on Laws Shoals Road in Lowndes County and call police, she continued.
When the two men inside the truck saw they had been found, they backed into a road sign on 15th Street South, bailed and ran from the scene, Songer said.
After a foot chase, police arrested 20-year-old Vontrais Jones, of 1010 Fifth Ave. N.
Officers also took into custody a 16-year-old boy who was receiving a ride to school and was not aware the vehicle was stolen, Songer said. He was questioned and released without charges.
The defendant faces at least one felony charge of taking a motor vehicle.
