Life just got a little more chaotic for Kellie Short. Recently she was flooded with calls about break-ins at Providence Place in Columbus. Police are investigating a string of home burglaries in the subdivision. And Short, property manager for Providence Place and Columbus Gardens, has had to field the calls and help reassure tenants.
Providence Place, a quarter-mile street off of Yorkville Road with 21 houses, has reported five break-ins over the past two weeks. Local law enforcement and elected officials hosted a community meeting about crime prevention last week.
Meanwhile, Short, a mother of three and a five-year Mary Kay saleswoman, already had her hands full before the break-ins.
Short moved from Macon to Starkville four years ago, and her children, Jas”min, Mia and Andy, attend Starkville schools. They are in grades five, two and kindergarten, respectively.
Why did you move to Starkville?
The school district. I wanted more diversity and more extracurricular activities.
As a property manager, you probably get all kinds of calls. What is the strangest call you”ve gotten?
That someone”s house has been broken into three times. That”s pretty out of the ordinary.
So do you have to be on call 24-7?
The maintenance technician is on call, but I have to be available if anything major happens.
What do you do on your free time?
Spend time with my babies.
If you could do one thing — money is no object — what would it be?
Build me my dream house.
