STARKVILLE — About 2,000 students from around the Golden Triangle will converge on McComas Hall at Mississippi State University this week as the university”s theatre and music departments collaborate to perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart”s “The Magic Flute.”
More than 30 cast and crew members will perform shows throughout the week for school children from Columbus and Starkville. The students are to receive activity books which will allow them to explore the different elements of opera and theater.
A performance for the general public will be held Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. General admission costs $10 for the Nov. 21 show, while students get in for $5.
Dr. Donna Clevinger, a professor of theatre in the Communication Department, will direct the musical about a prince and a princess, and their trials with courage, knowledge, love and the gift of a magical flute.
“It”s opera that you can certainly sit back and enjoy,” Clevinger said. “Even though it was written centuries ago, it”s still timely and has meaning to us today. It”s a love story. In fact, it”s a couple of love stories. The costumes are beautiful and exquisite. The props are exciting visually. They”re colorful. All this makes it very exciting for young audiences.”
“It”s been a long time since a collaboration like this took place,” she added. “It”s important not to miss the opportunity to share in this experience. You usually have to go to large cities to see something like this.”
A grant from the Starkville Area Arts Council will help defray some of the costs of the performance. For more information or to reserve tickets, call 662-325-9162.
