Lowndes County School District is moving forward on plans to improve its central office on Highway 45 South.
The county school board accepted a bid from Burks-Mordecai Builders Inc. to add approximately 3,000 square feet of interior space and a new parking lot and alternates, including landscaping, painting, laying carpet, renovating the special education offices and installing a new fire-alarm system.
The project will cost the district a little more than $1 million.
The added square footage will mean new restrooms and a new boardroom, capable of hosting 80 visitors; capacity in the current boardroom is about 58.
Ten contractors submitted bids for the project. Base bids ranged from $917,000, submitted by Burks-Mordecai to $1.26 million, submitted by Renrock Construction.
Factoring in eight alternates, which ranged from a new sign to a new security system and opaque window shades, bids ranged from $1.09 million, submitted by Burks-Mordecai to $1.48 million, submitted by Renrock. Other bidders on the project were Century Construction, Conn Construction CIG Contractors, Sam Oswalt and Son, Sanderson Construction, Weathers Construction and West Brothers Construction.
Board architect Joey Henderson of JBHM Architects Friday recommended the board approve the bid from Burks-Mordecai. The decision was passed unanimously.
