Residents of Starkville and Oktibbeha County still have time to submit their nominations to the Greater Starkville Development Partnership for the organization”s annual “best-of” awards in business, education, military and community service.
The Partnership Thursday extended the deadline for nomination submissions from Nov. 22 to Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. Citizens can pick up nomination forms for any of the four awards categories at the GSDP office, located at 200 E. Main St., Starkville.
The T.E. Veitch Community Service Award is given each year to a person or persons who demonstrate outstanding community service or civic contributions. Starkville Community Market founders Tammy Carlisle and Jeremiah Dumas, who now serves as alderman of Ward 5, won the T.E. Veitch Award in 2009.
The R. Clay Simmons Exemplary Enterprise Award is given each year to a business which has made outstanding contributions to the community and has manifested superior business practices. Prudential Starkville Properties won the award in 2009.
The Military Affairs Committee”s Service to the Military Award is given each year to an organization or individual who has provided significant service to the military community of Oktibbeha County. Gulf States Manufacturers captured the award in 2009.
The Greater Starkville Development Partnership also is accepting nominations for the 2010 Starkville Area Education Hall of Fame. Nominees can come from any level of education, whether it is elementary school, secondary school, community college or university, said GSDP Vice President of Membership and Community Development Allison Matthews.
“We should really get a lot of nominations,” Mathews said. “I know we have a lot of teachers and administrators in this area, so we should have several nominations to choose from, but we really do need people in the community to be aware of the nomination process.”
To submit nominations, stop by the GSDP office, call 662-323-3322, or e-mail Matthews at [email protected]. Winners will be announced at the GSDP banquet Jan. 20 in the Foster Ballroom at Mississippi State University”s Colvard Student Union.
“These are prestigious honors,” Matthews said. “The honorees are in good company with people who have really done some amazing things in our community. The people who have been honored in the past have really worked for our community. It”s quite an honor to receive that. It goes to somebody who truly has service first in their heart for our community.”
