Call her a philanthropist, a “cultural icon” or even eccentric. But children, throughout the years, have known her simply as Mother Goose.
And Mother Goose, aka Edwina Williams, aka Miz Claus, was met with a standing ovation at the Town and Tower Club meeting, as was retired Mississippi University for Women professor Dr. Robert Gilbert. Both were honored by the club with service awards at MUW, Tuesday.
“I”ve never been more surprised in my life. I thought I was here to support her,” Gilbert said, embracing Williams.
The poem, “The True Gentleman,” by John Walter Wayland describes “Dr. Bob” perfectly, John Davis said, in presenting Gilbert the Campus Service Award.
Gilbert is a “wonderful gentleman, scholar and servant,” Davis said.
Gilbert served in World War II and the Korean War. He taught at MUW from 1954-1980 and retired as a professor emeritus of sociology.
“Our lives have been enriched” because of him, Davis said.
Sid Caradine, in presenting Williams the Community Service Award, thanked her for the “wonderful memories, laughs and smiles.”
“When you were at Lee High School, you were a cheerleader, and you have been cheering us ever since,” Caradine said.
“I”m just thrilled and honored, especially since it”s Town and Tower and my alma mater,” Williams said.
Williams is the author of three children”s books and has collaborated on several books with Mississippi State University College of Education faculty members. She also works with the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library”s Children”s Corner and Children”s Book Week.
Williams created the Mother Goose entertainment business in the 1970s and remains ever in character.
“It makes me happy. It always brings a smile to my face,” she said. “And I hope it brings a smile to others.”
