Three businesses were evacuated today when Mississippi Department of Transportation crews reportedly broke a gas line off of Main Street.
The crews broke the Atmos Energy natural gas line while putting in a stop sign at the west corner of the Main Street and 22nd Street intersection at about 9:30 a.m., according to Columbus Fire and Rescue.
Main Street was quickly closed from 21st Street to 23rd Street and the Salvation Army office, Fishes and Loaves and the old Budweiser building were evacuated.
Main Street was reopened around 1 p.m. after crews worked to shut off the gas and repair the leak.
