JACKSON – Lawmakers are taking a three-day weekend after wrapping up light legislative work today.
Senate President Pro Tempore Billy Hewes said it”s a cost-saving move. He said there was no need for legislators to return on Friday since there weren”t any items on the calendar.
The 2011 Legislature began Tuesday and lawmakers spent the first day fast-tracking a $75 million bond bill to provide a loan to a California company that wants to manufacture solar panels in Hattiesburg. On Wednesday, the House made an unsuccessful attempt to override Gov. Haley Barbour”s veto of legislation to put a $20 million subsidy into a state wind insurance fund.
Lawmakers will spend the next three months writing a spending plan for the fiscal year that begins July 1.
