After 17 people qualified Tuesday for the upcoming Oktibbeha County elections, five more qualified Wednesday and Thursday.
Republican Benny Perkins qualified Wednesday for the District 3 Board of Supervisors seat. He joins the race against incumbent District 3 Supervisor Marvell Howard and fellow challenger Dennis Daniels.
In the race for the District 2 Supervisor seat, Democrat Tremell Sherman qualified Wednesday to unseat longtime Supervisor Orlando Trainer. Trainer qualified for reelection Tuesday, the first day of qualifying.
While District 2 Constable Curtis Randle qualified for reelection Tuesday, fellow Constable James Lindsey, of District 3, qualified Wednesday for another run. In the race for the District 1 constable race, Curtis White qualified Wednesday and Joe Morse qualified Thursday for the race to unseat current District 1 Constable Jimmy Shurden, who has yet to qualify.
Sheriff Dolph Bryan, who has been in office since 1976, qualified Tuesday to run for reelection. The only other candidate to qualify for the sheriff”s race as of Thursday was Charles Sanders.
All five members of the county”s Board of Supervisors – Carl Clardy in District 1, Trainer in District 2, Howard in District 3, Daniel Jackson in District 4 and John Young in District 5 – qualified to run for reelection. Democrat Sheila Lane qualified Tuesday to challenge Young in District 5.
Oktibbeha County Justice Court judges William Boykin, Jim Mills and W. Bernard Crump all qualified to run for reelection, along with Chancery Clerk Monica Banks and Oktibbeha County School District Superintendent James Covington. Allen Morgan and Debbie Carrithers qualified to run for the office of tax assessor, which is currently held by Pat Kight.
Potential candidates have until March 1 to qualify. The primary election is set for Aug. 2, while the general election is scheduled for Nov. 8.
Prospective candidates can fill out qualifying documents at the Oktibbeha County Courthouse Annex, located at 108 W. Main St., Starkville, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
