United Way seeks fan donations

Temperatures have been relatively cool this week, but several hot days, along with the advent of summer, prompted local agencies to distribute electric fans to low income families this week. The annual fan drive began in 2006 and is a coordinated outreach effort by the United Way of Lowndes County and Helping Hands.

Final figures are still being calculated, but organizers for the 17th Annual Market Street Festival -- Columbus' largest outdoor event -- are projecting more than 36,000 people attended the weekend event. Main Street Columbus Executive Director Amber Brislin said sales indicated the event drew a larger crowd than in 2011.

Heavily armed FBI agents and authorities from Mississippi and Tennessee were searching woods and back roads for what they said was a dangerous man suspected of killing a Tennessee woman and her teenage daughter and fleeing with her two younger girls.

As a preemptive measure, the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors Monday voted to perform drug tests on all Road Department employees once a year and then employees will randomly be chosen for drug tests three subsequent times throughout the year.

Mississippi State student dies in car accident

Mississippi State University lost one of its happiest students, her classmates said. Katherine Elizabeth "Katie Beth" Carruth, 21, died Friday evening in a single-car accident just south of Okolona, as she was returning to her home in Tupelo after completing classes at MSU earlier in the day.
