Michael D. Pratt, age 44, died on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at his residence. Visitation will be at The Trotter Convention Center (upstairs) from 9:00 AM-11:00 AM on Thursday, May 2, 2013. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM with Dr. Shawn Parker officiating. Gunter and Peel Funeral Home will be in charge of his services. Mike was born January 13, 1969, in Iowa City, Iowa, to the late Harry E. Pratt. As a child they moved to Esterville, Iowa, and he graduated from Esterville High School. He was a four-year letterman in high school in cross country, basketball and baseball. When he was 17, he made the American Cross Country Team to represent the United States during the New Year’s Eve, London, Hyde Park Marathon. He placed 113 out of thousands of runners. After high school Mike joined the U.S. Navy and became a Navy Seabee. He served as a Bee for 12 years. He left the military to dedicate his time to his family. Mike loved his country but wanted to be there to watch his boys grow up. Mike was an active part of the sports community. He coached Little League Baseball for eight years. Many of those he coached continued to play baseball in high school and in college. Before coming to Columbus, Mike was the Director of Construction for Wright Investment Corporation. He accepted the position of Public Works Director in September 2008. Mike is survived by his wife, Kim Whitrock Pratt; and sons, Ryan Michael and Stephen Matthew Pratt. Pallbearers will be the Honor Guard from Columbus Fire and Rescue and the Columbus Police Department. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Michael Pratt Memorial Fund, BancorpSouth, P.O. Box 1406, Columbus, MS 39703, a scholarship fund for his sons.
